The more gasoline prices go up, the fewer the trips that seem
really necessary. Many errands can be handled just as well by
phone. Save yourself energy, money and disappointment.

Sociology students at DHS
listen to probation officer
Sociology students at
Donegal High School had a
chance to question a
juvenile patrol officer last
week.
Jill. Shupp, a Donegal
graduate, spoke to about
100 students. Ms. Shupp
has been a patrol officer for
Lancaster County for the
past three years.
~ A graduate of Millersville
State College, she had a
duel major in psychology
and social work. ‘‘I always
knew I wanted to be a parol
officer. My education was

part of my preparation.”
Ms. Shupp finds her job
both challenging and re-
warding. ‘It is really
frustrating the way some
kids respond. They just
don’t want your help.”’
After only one week on
the job, Ms. Shupp had an
experience that would have
driven many from the field.
“l had as a client an
8-year-old Amish girl ac-
cused of murder! That was a
rough one.” Fortunately
things went smoothly in that
case after a medical dis-
covery proved that the little
girl could not control her
actions. Jill remarks that
she has had no case to
compare with that one in the
three years since.
In addition to explaining
legal rights and proceedings
to the students, Ms. Shupp
conducted a mock interview
with a student where she
took the role of the juvenile
and the student took the role
of parole officer. The
interview demonstrated the
difficult situations encount-
ered by the parole officer.
