The Rev. and Mrs. Hiestand greet guests
“This is Your Life’ presentation
surprises Esther Hiestand Sunday
Esther Hiestand, the wife
of Rev. John S. Hiestand,
Maytown, was guest of
honor at a ‘‘This is Your
Life’’ program staged at the
Congregational Bible
Church, Marietta, this past
Sunday evening. The event
was in observance of Mrs.
Hiestand’s 70th birthday
(February 1) and was held in
lieu of the regular service. A
skit, written by her daugh-
ter-in-law Barbara Hei-
stand, included members of
Mrs. Hiestand’s immediate
family, old photographs and
persons of significance in
her life.
Mrs. Hiestand is the
daughter of the late Isaac
and Katie Erb. She and Rev.
Hiestand have five children:
Helen, wife of Roy Burk-
holder, Lititz; Marion, wife
of Larry Carpenter; Nadyne,
wife of Mark Batts, Birm-
ingham, Alabama (they flew
up for the occasion); John
and Robert, both of May-
town. The couple has
thirteen grandchildren.
Born and raised in the
Lititz area, Esther had one
brother (now deceased) and
one sister, Helen, who was
present for Sunday’s cele-
bration.
Miriam Kauffman was the
narrator for “This is Your
Life’’. James Gish, pres-
ident of church council,
brought greetings from the
host church.
Following the program,
Mrs. Hiestand was present-
ed personal and monetary
gifts.
Mrs. Hiestand has been
active in the church as a
minister’s wife, a Sunday
School teacher and, current-
ly, president of the Ladies
Fellowship of Congregation-
al. She and her husband are
the intexim Pastors family of
the Maytown Church of
God. There were at least SS
from that group at Sunday
evening’s tribute.
Also at the event were the
“Merry Maids’’, fourteen
female friends who have
been associated since youth;
Heavenly Delights, the
original kitchen committee
from Congregational Bible
Church consisting of seven
women; and at least three
former ‘‘fresh air’’ children,
now adults, who with their
spouses came from New
York to extend greetings to
‘““Mother’’. In all, over 400
people attended.
Serving as the committee
arranging the tribute were
Sarah Mull, Joy Newton and
Barbara Hiestand.

M.J. Mathias loves new position;
attributes success to fellow workers
‘‘I was a job-hopper until I
came to Warner Cable ten
years ago,’’ says Mary Jane
Mathias. ‘1 would start a
new job in September and
quit that same job about
March or April. I just never
liked anything enough to
stay. My friends told me
that if I kept it up, I would
not be able to find a job
anywhere.”
But Mary Jane has been
with Warner Cable of
Marietta for the past ten
years, and she attributes
that to the challenges of the
job and her fellow employ-
ees—especially manager
Ron Ammick.
Not only has Mary Jane
stuck with her job; she has
done very well at it. In just
ten short years she moved
from office clerk to her
recently appointed position
of administrative assistant
to the manager.
“Warner is very pleased
with how rapidly I moved
with the company,” Mary
Jane grins. “Not only am 1
one of the first women to
hold such a position, but I
got here pretty quickly.”
Mary Jane’s new duties
are all in addition to her old
duties as office manager.
“It keeps me busy,”’ she
laughs.
Warner Cable recently
merged with American Ex-
press and has taken on the
new name Warner Amex.
‘““We now have 140 systems
in 29 different states,”
Mary Jane tells us, ‘“‘and we

distributers in the U.S. with
665,000 subscribers. But our
aim is to be not only the
biggest, but also the best.”
Mary Jane has many good
things to say about the
company she works for. She
