January 23, 1980 Dr. Francis Ferguson SUSQUEHANNA TIMES—Page 9 Dr. Francis L. Ferguson, of Maytown, receives award for design of New Town Nelson Dr. Francis L. Ferguson, a resident of Maytown and Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at Penn State, Capitol Campus, has received a Celebration of Architecture award for his design of the New Town of Nelson, Pennsylvania. Ferguson won among 73 entries for the award from the 1000-member organizat- ion, Pennsylvania Society of Architects. Ferguson designed the New Town of Nelson, when plans were made to build a huge dam in Tioga County that would flood the old town of Nelson. The new town designed by Ferguson for high and dry ground, preserved the institutions of the old community and encouraged the growth of community spirit by centering the new community around a Village Green. Ferguson described the opportunity for a planner to design an entire community is one that ‘‘comes only once in a lifetime,’”’ according to Ferguson. He worked day and night developing his plans, trying to meet a very tight schedule. A graduate of Notre Dame, Harvard, and Colum- bia Universities, Ferguson has degrees in both architecture and urban planning. He worked in both fields in New York and Paris before becoming a professor at Columbia University’s School of Architecture. Dr. Ferguson directed the planning of Villa Riva, a town in the Dominican Republic and collaborated in the planning of New Providence Island and the City of Nassau in the Bahamas. He joined the Graduate Program in Urban and Regional planning at Capitol Campus in 1971. A former chairman of the department, he is now Professor of Environmental Design. A- mong his publications is the book, ‘‘Architecture, Cities and the Systems Ap- proach,” selected by the Library of Urban Affairs Book Club. Dr. Ferguson lives with his wife Eileen and their children: Mike, Aimee, and Jack, in Maytown. make the mess less. IN-SINK-ERATOR DISPOSERS DO MORE. There have to be good reasons why more In-Sink-Erator dis- posers are sold and installed every year than any other make. Our grinding ring, for example, is the strongest made. It's the core of our disposers along with our own ISE-made electric motors. Then we add the extra things. A tough polypropylene shield protects against interior corro- sion. Automatic reversing action extends the life of the grinding elements. So ask for In-Sink-Erator next time. To make your mess less... we make our disposers do more. R.V. RICHARDS & SONS, INC.
