Obituaries
MARIE S. BECHTEL
Marie S. Bechtel, 69, of
232 W. Market Street,
Marietta, died at the
Heatherbank Convalescent
Center, Columbia, after an
illness of 18 months.
She was the wife of Harry
B. Bechtel.
Mrs. Bechtel was a
member of the English
United Presbyterian Church
in Marietta. She was born in
Elizabethtown R1 and was
the daughter of the late
Jacob E. and Barbara Shivas
Shearer.
Surviving in addition to
her husband, are two sisters
and a brother: May S., wife
of John Gibble, Marietta R1;
Jean S., wife of Wilbur
Landis, Bainbridge R1; and
Robert C. Shearer, Eliza-
bethtown R1.
LAURENCE GUTSHALL
Laurence J. Gutshall of
Bainbridge died at the
Lancaster General Hospital
after an illness of three
months. He was 54.
Mr. Gutshall was the
husband of the late Velma
Shirk Gutshall. He worked
at Wyeth Labortories in
Marietta for 18 years.
He served as a Staff
Sergeant in the Air Force in
the 645th Bombardment
Squadron during World War
I. He was awarded the
European, African, and
Middle East Theaters of
Operation ribbons, four
bronze service stars and
eleven bronze oak leaf
clusters.
A member of the Loyal
Order of Moose Lodge 596,
Elizabethtown, and the
Wyeth Bowling League, he
attended Falmouth United
Methodist Church.
He was born in New

Surviving him are his

bridge; Mindy, wife of
Jeffrey W. Hummer, Eliza-
bethtown; four brothers:
Charles and Clark, both of
Bainbridge; Benjamin, of
Rheems, and Eugene, Ly-
kens; and four sisters: Mrs.
Helen Reed, Coconut Grove,
Fla.; Mrs. Mary Storm,
Bainbridge R1; Mable Gut-
shall, Elizabethtown; and
Mrs. Nettie Eichelberger,
Red Lion; and six grand-
children.
ANNA E. POWERS
Anne E. Powers, 86,
formerly of Marietta, died at
Frankford Hospital, Phila-
delphia.
She was the widow of
James Powers. She had
lived with her son, Miller H.
Powers, 4624 E. Thompson
St., Philadelphia, for the
past 18 months. She had
resided in Marietta most of
her life.
She belonged to St.
John’s Episcopal Church,
Marietta.
Born in Marietta, she was
the daughter of the late
Joseph A. and Rebecca
Naylor McLain.
In addition to her son, she
is survived by two grand-
children and two brothers,
William R. and Harry R.
McLain, both of Marietta.
