Page 6—SUSQUEHANNA TIMES ; Marietta Jaycees discuss plans for old high school The year 1980 marks ten years since the Marietta Jaycees purchased the old Marietta High School. Their goal in 1970 was to renovate the building into a recrea- tion center serving the community of Marietta and its surrounding areas. From 1970 to 1977 progress was slow and consisted entirely of volun- teer manpower and fund raising. During this time windows were replaced, painting was done and many hours were spent in general clean-up and maintenance. In 1977 the Jaycees secured the services of the DeVitry, Gilbert, and Bradley architectual firm, in an attempt to secure federal funding. The firm did a feasability study of the community needs and how adaptable the building would be in fulfilling these needs. Their report, along with the proposal, was submitted. In 1978 the Jaycees of Marietta received their first federal grant approval for the building. It was decided that this money, which would be made available in 1979, would be used to put a new roof over the gym and to secure the services of the architectual firm in an attempt to obtain future federal funding. In 1979 the Marietta Jaycees received the ap- proval for their second federal grant to be used on the recreation center. This money would be available for use in 1980. During this time the Jaycees have done some demolition on the first floor. The old gym floor was taken up, the stage and gym areas were cleaned of several truckloads of debris and a few walls were removed. The Jaycees are now involved in putting a roof on the remainder of the building. It has been decided to use the 1980 federal funds to complete the gym and locker rooms. The stage is also set for completion in addition to finished classrooms for praject Head Start to use. During this time the Jaycees hope to renovate two general meeting rooms upstairs. September 1980 has been projected as the completion of these goals. A governing body, called the Marietta Trust Fund, has been established to handle future policies and decisions on the Recreation Center. Smith, newly elected president of the Mount Joy Borough Coun- cil, told the Susquehanna Times last week, “I feel we have a good council and a good borough manager to work with for the next two years. | hope we can keep on the way we have in providing services—and if we can provide some new services, without spending too many dollars—goed. *There are a few pet things I’ve been interested in over the years: up-grad- ing the storm sewers and better street lighting.
