They are designed for the
new sport of snowshoe
racing, which is already
popular in parts of Canada.
Surprisingly, it also has a
few adherents in Baja
California, where snowshoe
races are held across the
sand dunes.
Carl's snowshoes meet
the specifications of the
United States Snowshoe
Association (or USSSA).
which promotes snowshoe
racing in this country. The
group (which can be
contacted at Box 170,
Corinth, New York) hopes to
make snowshoe racing a
scheduled event in the next
Winter Olympics.
"The first step in snowshoe
construction, for Carl Heil-
man, is cutting down a
suitable white ash tree. He
then saws, splits and shaves
the wood into long sticks
which are steamed and bent
into shape.
Laces are nylon-core
neoprene. ‘‘It’s better than
rawhide,’ he says, ‘‘be-
cause snow won't freeze up
on it. Also, it won't crack.’
It takes Heilman about 12
hours to make a pair of
snowshoes.
Anyone who wants more
information can contact Carl
Heilman at Box 213A, Brant
Lake, New York.
