Bullets take lead
in Chiques basketball
Movie Review
Star Trek— The Motion Picture
The Chiques A.A.A. Bas-
ketball League closed out its
final week of 1979 with the
following games played.
On December 17th, the
Sixers beat the Sonics 90 to
50, and the Bullets defeated
the Bucs 70 to 66 to move
into first place.
On December 20th, the
Bucs overcame the Sixers 78
to 72, and the Bullets beat
the Sonics 75 to 62.
The league will resume
Junuary 7 at Farmdale
Elementary School with the
first game starting at 7 pm.

AAA Volleyball
The Chiques A.A.A. Co-
ed Volleyball League played
its last game before the
holidays on Sunday, Dec-
ember 16. Big ‘‘L’’ defeated
Harris Hub 1S to 3 and 15S to
6 to remain one game up in
first place. In the second
match, Fay Sherman's took
a forfeit from Three Center
Square.
League play will resume
on January 6 at the Marietta
Community Gym, with the
first match starting at 1 pm.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTION
Now that the old and wornout year
Its devious course has run,
And had its customary share
Of worry, work and fun;
And Christmas, too, with all its joy
Of gifts and shopping flurry.
Has been like other Christmases
Have been and just as merry:
We greet another new-born year

Star Trek—The Motion
Picture opend recently at
the Wonderland 3 Theater
in Lancaster. The film
seems to be doing quite well
locally, judging from the
early ‘attendance at the
theater.
Regardless of its artistic
and entertainment value,
Star Trek is attracting
enormous media attention
because of its reported $42
million cost, and the built-in
appeal of its ‘‘Trekkie”
admirers. I'm reasonably
sure, based partially upon
my initial observations, that
the picture will attract its
hard-core ‘‘Trekkie’’ follow-
ing. The critical payback
question, as I view it,
involves whether or not the
movie can achieve a broad-
er-based appeal.

have created a visual feast,
utilizing a wide array of
special photographic ef-
fects. They have turned Star
Trek into an endless light
show. This is especially true
in the space-warp sequence
and the long encounter with
the alien life force. In this
respect, director Robert
Wise's film more closely
resembles Close Encounter
and 2001 than it does Star
Wars.
The biggest mistake the
makers of Star Trek made
was to overly complicate the
plot and strip it of any direct
action and violence. Furth-
ermore, the reverse-anthro-
pomorphic ending, I think,
except for the case of true
sci-fi followers, was a
serious miscalculation also.
The original television
cast is back, a little older,
but unfortunately not any
wiser.
