Marietta Council adopts budget; recommends apartment renovation The Marietta Borough Council adopted the 1980 budget as presented. at last Tuesday's session. $198,850 is the amount of the total general fund. Cost of living pay raises for the borough employees, plus higher fees for police protection, ne- cessitated a $19,000 in- crease over the $179,990 budget of 1979. Also adopted was an ordinance setting the tax levy on real property at 23 mills. In further business, coun- cil rejected its single bid from United Disposal Inc. of Elizabethtown for trash and garbage collection. Council will advertise for more bids to be opened at the January meeting. Council made known that it is in favor of a variance to the zoning of the former Sylvania Shoe Factory from Industrial to R-60 (resident- ial). Recommendations will be made to the Lancaster County Planning Commis- sion, the Marietta Planning Commission and the Zoning Hearing Board. This action paves the way for Historic Landmarks, Inc., to request a variance to alter the existing structure to a 26 apartment complex. A committee of two council members and two residents investigated the feasability of the above project, and certain guidelines for the future have been _ estab- lished agreeable to the new owners. In further action, Howard Albright, owner of a prop- erty at 404 East Front Street was given 30 days to demolish the structure or council will accept the low bid of Wilbur E. Mohr at $500 for the job. Council voted to use insurance monies from a damaged cruiser along with the trade-in of a second Ken _. Marietta, tells Santa Claus nr he wants for Christmas. Santa arrived at the Market Kart in Marietta by way of the Maytown Fire Truck. vehicle, to purchase a new borough cruiser. Bids will be opened at the January meeting. Repairs will be made to the borough building. En- gineers will investigate the possibility of the damage being caused by vibrations from the siren. Parking in the lot to the rear of the borough hall will be limited to borough vehicles or to those persons with borough business. President of council John Reuter and secretery Marg- aret Booth were authorized to sign the necessary documents between the Marietta Borough and the Lancaster Redevelopment Authority for Phase II of the reconstruction of storm sewers. The same officials were authorized to sign with the same authority for a grant of $27,000 for land acquisition. Contracts will be awarded to the lowest bidder. Calvin Fuhrman was ap- pointed housing inspector and Ralph Shope was appointed deputy inspector for the borough. Guidelines concerning these part-time jobs have been outlined. Free parking will be in existence until January 2, 1980. A solicitor explained the Flood Plain ordinance which is to be adopted in January. A public hearing will be held prior to that meeting in the council chambers. Building permits issued prior to February 1, to property owners, enables building in this area. The ordinance does not effect the Historic District. Council made the follow- ing appointments: Ron Perry reappointed to the Zoning Hearing Board; Jerry Martin reappointed to the Housing Hearing Board; Fances Allum reappointed to the Planning Commis- sion; and Ben Thompson reappointed to the Marietta Authority. Council! alloted $208 sub- ject to approval by the finance committee, to Gary Newton and Ken Smith, who will initiate a Street Hockey League. Poster for the Marietta Ambulance Association, showing just how much more money is needed, and reading ‘‘Send the temperature to the top! 19 Marietta Area Ambulance Assoc. launches drive to reduce debt The Marietta Area Ambu- lance Association has launched a fund-raising campaign to reduce its debt of $5900. That amount is still owed to Farmers First Bank on the recently purchased ambulance. Contributions may be placed in the container provided at Farmers First Bank or may be forwarded to Mary Miller, ambulance treasurer. The ‘‘van’’ was pur- chased at $18,000. The old ambulance had a trade-in value of $3,000. The Board of Directors and the crew personnel have paid off $9100, leaving $5900 to be paid off. A new communications unit has just been installed in the ambulance which will give the crew an open line to hospitals once the county hook-up is completed. Memberships are also available at Farmers First Bank at $7 per family and $5 per individual subscription. Mount Joy Borough Planning Commission to meet Thursday night The only major govern- mental meeting scheduled this week will be the Mount Joy Borough Planning Com- mission. The meeting will be held in the Mount Joy Borough Office Building, December 27, 7:30PM.
