With the Christmas sea- son fast approaching, May- town Fire Chief Charles Shaffner offers this holiday safety advice: The trees and electric lights that make the holiday season so beautiful can also make it the most dangerous time of year from the stand- point of fires. One of the first things every resident should consider is tree safety: what you put on the tree and where you place the tree itself. The cut tree should be as fresh as possible. A cut tree should be stored outside and placed in a bucket of water, after cutting about one inch off the end of the trunk for water absorption. Once the tree is brought inside, it should again be placed in water, away from doors, stairs, or passageways. It should be kept away from any direct source of heat, such as a fireplace. When the ‘needles start to drop, it's time to remove the tree from your house, as at that time it’s a pretty good fire hazard. As far as tree decorations are concerned, Chief Shaff- ner says that all lights should be certified by the Underwriters Laboratories and “carry the ‘UL’ seal. Older lights should be checked to see that the wiring is sound with no breaks or frays. A frayed wire can cause a short circuit, which could set fire to any type of tree. Try not to place lights on the tree where the bulbs might come in contact with needles or tree limbs. Use the clips attached to each light to fasten them to the tree. Electric lights should not be placed on artificial trees made of metal. Arti- ficial trees should only be illuminated by spotlights. Once the lights are on the tree. no more than three light strings should be stacked at a receptacle. The fuse box in the house should be checked to see make sure that the receptacle used for the tree isn’t rated at more than 15 amps, and the receptacle should be switch- controlled. The Christmas tree should be turned off at night or whenever the room in which the tree is located is unoccupied. On Christmas Day. gift wrapping removed from packages should be picked up immediately and placed in a metal container. Paper left lying around could be set on fire with a dropped match or cigarette. Extra special care should be taken with Christmas candles. Never place candles on the trees, near curtains, or near any other flammable material. Remember, clectric lights marked for indoor use can’t be used outdoors, but outdoor lights can be used indoors. Smoke detectors make ideal Christmas gifts. Why not buy one for a friend or relative this Christmas sea- son? It might be the best investment you'll = ever make. Have a safe and happy Holiday Season!
