a volume describing fresh-
water mollusks in the United
States. He also published a
work in French on shells.
In 1844 he wrote an article
on ‘‘Species and Their
Distribution,’’ in which he
discussed variations that
occur within a species. This
work was read by Charles
Darwin and was later quoted
by Darwin in his ‘‘Origin of
Species.”
In 1843 his interests
suddenly shifted to ento-
mology. In one summer he
collected 2050 specimens of
various kinds of insects.
In 1841 he was appointed
professor of zoology at the
Franklin Institute in Phila-
delphia. Later, he was
professor of natural history
at the University of
Pennsylvania.
Meanwhile, he was be-
coming interested in the
study of language. He
studied the sounds made by
the human voice. One of his
studies was of the sounds
used in various Indian
languages.
Because of his interest in
phonetics he became inter-
ested in spelling reform. His
interest in words led him
into etymology (Study of
derivations of words). He

Haldeman (cont.)
corresponded with Noah
Webster about the origins of
some words.
Once when he was
attended a conference on
language, a young man
started to talk about an
insect. Haldeman corrected
the young man on his
pronunciation of the Latin
name of the insect. The
young man defended his
pronunciation of the insect’s
name. Professor Haldeman
let him go on, then said,
“You see, I discovered and
named that insect, and a
man objects to having his
children ill treated.’’
As a result of his work in
language studies, he was
appointed professor of
comparative philology at the
University of Pennsylvania.
His favorite working place
was always his home at
Chiques. He travelled, but
only to collect data for his
studies.
His life was not entirely
happy; two of his children
died before growing up. He
had some financial worries.
Always original and
different, he became a
Catholic when he was 30
years old, although he had
been brought up a Protest-
ant. He was one of the
founders of St. Mary's
Church in Marietta.
He died in 1880 at age 68,
working in his study in the
big house at Chiques.

bulance Association elected
the following officers for the
coming year: Nancy Hernei-
son, crew chief; William
Ney, assistant crew chief;
Robin Eshleman, secretary-
treasurer; and Steve Bailey,
training officer.
Peggy L. Woodward of
Rivermoor was accepted as
a new member.
The ambulance’s new
radio will installed on
December 7th.
; “TM ALDAYS AMAZED 4
- wee Tea"
Nineteen calls were re-
ported for October, and 252
calls this year (through
November 16th).
The ambulance crew will
start a fund drive over the
holidays. Contributions may
be placed with the Marietta
branch of Farmers First
Bank. The money will be
used to pay off the
remaining debt on the new
ambulance, amounting at
the moment to $6000.
