The First Presbyterian
Church of Mount Joy held
services as early as 1746 but
was not formally organized
until December 1, 1839.
Plans for the 140th anniver-
sary include a congregation-
al supper at 5:30pm on
Saturday, November 3rd, at
which Dr. Nancy Tischler
will preside. She is an elder
of the church and is vice
moderator .of Donegal Pres-
bytery. Rev. William J.
Brown, executive Presbyter
of Donegal Presbytery, will
bring greetings from the
Presbytery. Rev. Gladstone
P. Cooley will speak on
“Looking at the Past’’ and
Rev. Norman M. Dunsmore,
interim pastor, will talk
briefly on ‘‘Looking to the
Future.” Mrs. Kenneth
Ober will play the organ in
the church sanctuary for a
quarter of an hour before
supper:
On Sunday morning,
November 4th, the Sunday
School will meet at 9:30am
in the church sanctuary for a
special program. The teach-
er for the adult class will be
Rev. Herbert Moyer, a
former pastor, who will lead
a study of the Book of
Philemon.
The 11:00 o'clock service
will be conducted by Rev.
Norman M. Dunsmore,
assisted by Dr. Victor Baer,
pastor of the Donegal
Presbyterian Church. The
sermon will be given by Dr.
William G. Rusch, who will
use the theme, ‘‘A Church
Big Enough For God.’' Dr.
Rusch is a graduate of
Washington and Jefferson
College, magna cum laude,
and among other honors was
elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
He completed his theologic-
al training at Western Theo-
logical Seminary in 1950
being awarded the Church
History prize and the
Hebrew prize. He also
received a Master of Educa-
tion degree from the
University of Pittsburgh and
later a Doctor Ph.D. He
completed his Doctor of
Ministry degree at Pitts-
burgh Theological Semin--
ary. His sermons have been
published in three national
magazines, and they have
been broadcast weekly for
thirteen years. He was
president of the Council of
Churches in 1977-78, and
has served on the General
Mission Council of the
United Presbyterian Church
USA, and is presently
executive of the Synod of the
Trinity.
Methodist women plan
bazaar for Sat. Nov. 10
The United Methodist
Women will sponsor a
Holiday Bazaar on Saturday,
Nov. 10th, from 9am to 4pm
at Chiques United Metho-
dist Church, located along
Route 230, 2 miles east of
Mount Joy.
Featured at the Bazaar
will be holiday crafts, home
baked goods, candies, a
country store, plants and
fresh vegetables, and a
white elephant sale. There
will be a fish pond for the
children.
The kitchen will be open
throughout the day serving
home made soups and sand-
wiches.
This is an annual affair
and the proceeds are used in
the many projects of the
United Methodist Women.
