One will operate the plant; the other is a dummy, for training operators. Fake controls, or ‘‘simul- ators,’’ have been used for years to train airplane pilots. Now PP&L is applying that idea to nuclear plants. The fake control room, which cost $10 million, is just like the real control room, dial for dial, except that it’s hooked to a big computer instead of a power plant. Operators in training will have to deal with any of the computer’s 1500 mal- function simulations, as well as studying math, physics, and the properties of super- heated water—all subjects that will make it easier for operators to deal with an unusual problem. PP&I president Robert Campbell said, ‘“We want them to be able to solve real, unanticipated problems if they arise when the plant is on-line.” While the training center is now open, the Berwick plant itself is not yet on-line. The recently-dedicated Berwick training center is one of four operated by PP&L. PP&L’s present on-line plants are all use conventional fuels. Jaycee run (cont.) Cute Saying A local family went to New York recently, mostly because they wanted their children to see the muse- ums. The parents were pleased when their four-year-old son took a deep interest in the Egyptian exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was particularly interested in looking at the ancient mummies.
