Rosemary Patterson
shows flower pressing
Rosemary Patterson of
the Rosemary Shop near the
S-bend in Marietta held a
flower and plant pressing
workshop for the Marietta
Auxiliary to the Columbia
Hospital recently.
Rosemary told the Auxil-
iary members that flowers
can be pressed with any
heavy book, such as a phone
book. Other tools needed for
pressing are scissors, tweez-
ers and an artist’s paint
brush.
Flowers to be pressed
should be cut at noon,
ideally, and pressed while
still fresh. To prevent
deterioration, they can be
placed under glass.
If you try it, gather lots of
plant material, because
you'll undoubtedly bruise
much of it while getting your
design straight. Allow six
weeks of undisturbed drying
time.
The brush is used to put
glue on the plant parts used
in the pressing.
Flower pressing was quite
popular with Victorian
ladies, who used hair,
butterflies, and seaweed
along with their flowers.
After Rosemary’s talk,
the business session was
conducted by Mrs. Mary
Sarver. Plans for the
pinochle card party were
finalized: it will be held on
Oct. 16th, at 8:00pm, in the
Community House. Mrs.
William Heisey and Mrs.
George Houseal are co-
chairing this event.
A menu for the Christmas
luncheon was tentatively
agreed upon. The luncheon
will be held at the home of
Mrs. Sarver in Rheems on
Dec. 3rd at 12:30pm. Tickets
are available now at $3.50
each.
The Nov. 13th meeting
will be held at the home of
Mrs. Ralph Miller, 111
Fairview Ave., Marietta.
Hostesses for the October
meeting were Miss Ruth
Wisman and Mrs. Robert
Henry. Devotions were led
by Mrs. Heisey.
