carrier for 19 years. He took
over his father’s routes
when he became ill. Bill's
grandfather, Winfield L.,
was also a mail carrier. He
received the mail from a
train in Rheems and hand
delivered it, house to house,
all the way to Maytown.
The Star Route Mail
Carriers organization was
established in 1845. Con-
tractors negotiate every four
years for the routes and if a
new route is open, new
contracts must be signed.
Once you are a star route
mailman, only loss of good
health is reason enough to
cancel contracts. In death,
the estate is expected to
carry on the tradition.
Heisey handles eight
routes at the present time.
The mail is handled at the
sectional centers, in this
case Lancaster, from where
it is hauled to all county post
offices. There are about 16
such routes in Lancaster
County, plus one to Reading
and one to York.
The new facility in
Lancaster processes only
first class mail, while the
former post office in the city
handles 2nd and 3rd class
mail.
