September 19, 1979 Judy Weller w Parent of Week: Mrs. Judy Weller Judy (Mrs. Herbert) Weller has been referred te as a ‘‘mother woman,’’ because she likes to mother other children besides her own. Evvie (Mrs. Jere) Duke says that Judy Weller’s friends tease her sometimes about being like ‘‘the old woman who lived in a shoe,”’ because she has mothered so many other people’s children. For the past 11 years Mrs. Weller has baby-sat child- ren in her house. She wanted to work, but wanted to be home. She wanted to be at home when her children came home from school. Her baby-sitting started when she answered an ad in the newspaper. ‘I have always loved kids. I was around kids all my life. As a teenager I helped my sister with her children."’ Mrs. Weller says there are various advantages to having lots of children around your house. *‘I think when you're around kids they make you feel younger."’ Another advantage to having a lot of kids around your house is: ‘‘So I have someone here to play with my children. When I started baby-sitting I took care of a little girl the same age as my daughter.” Did her own children ever resent her giving so much attention to other children? “The only time they resented it was when | was taking care of a baby who was asleep and I told them they would have to keep quiet. “l think having other children around has made my children stronger. The other children taught them many things. They sure had all the childhood diseases. My children had all the diseases before they went to school, and then didn’t have to miss any school.” Mrs Weller's own child- ren are:Denny, Wendy, and Melody.;..s‘l have'~ three beautiful kids. I haven't had any serious problems with any of them. “I managed to get to all my children’s activities. It has always meant a lot to me to attend their activities, like Denny's soccer games when he was playing. "‘Being a mother is very rewarding. You give your kids lots of love. When they come home and tell me about something they did that they're proud of, that’s fantastic. You feel it’s special too. ““When it’s your birthday and they take money out of their little allowances to buy you something they think is great—it gets to me."’ Mrs. Weller moved to Mount Joy from Milton, Pa., 12 years ago ‘‘with the Weis store.” Her husband, Her- bert Weller, is the manager of Weis’. “I have my roots back in Milton, but I'm getting my roots down here too. If I had to pick a place to live, this would be it. There are nice people in Mount Joy.” In addition to being a very attentive mother to her own and other people’s children, Mrs. Weller is chairman of the Christian Service Com- mittee at Trinity Lutheran Church, leader of Junior Girl Scout Troop 35 in Mount Joy, member of a pinochle card club, and a bowling club. She just resigned after 11 years as a Sunday School teacher at Trinity Lutheran. She was also treasurer of the Parent-Teachers Associat- ion for four years. Full as her life is, as her son Denny says, ‘‘She never missed cooking a meal for us. Mrs. Weller says, ‘With men the size of my son and husband, I can’t afford to miss cooking a meal.”’ Both Mr. Weller and Denny are well over six feet and powerfully built.’ " 9 925540 FIN SACLE ~ RD Bainbridge Fire Co. Harvest Festival was held last Saturday at Nissley Vineyards The Bainbridge Fire Company’s Harvest Festival (picnic/dance/wine tasting) last Saturday was fun for all. The beautiful weather that day led to a very good turnout. The Nissley family served up their excellent wines and set up tubs of grapes for those enthusiastic enough to try stomping the fruit of the wine the old way, with their bare feet. A hose was thoughtfully provided for washing up afterwards. Zimmy Schmidt’s German Orchestra, dressed in leder- hosen-style shorts and Tyrolean hats, played some swinging tunes after George Engle had played on the organ. A splendid time was had by all. » i omp in g 3 MHA SUSQUEHANNA TIMES—Page 7 Girte¥33°1 30
