Germans call it Volks- marching. Americans call it Wandering. It has been going on in Europe for over a decade, but Americans are just beginning to know the fun of Wandering, thanks to the efforts of the American Wanderer’s Association with headquarters right here in Pennsylvania. Wandering is family oriented, fun, inexpensive, healthful and can be done without special equipment by both Grandma and the new baby. Wandering, as the name implies, is nothing more than taking a walk. Wanderers progress over a well-marked ten kilometer trail, pausing whenever the whim strikes to enjoy a picnic lunch, for a close-up look at the scenery, for a bit of a rest, or to take in one of the points of interest which are usually part of the trail. Wandering is non-com- petetive, which is probably the aspect most difficult for Americans to understand. Each Wanderer sets his or her own pace. Some run, some jog, some walk straight thru the whole trail. Others make the outing a day-long event complete with picnic lunch and the opportunity to meet new Y friends or renew acquaint- ee IN HISTORIC MARIETTA ances with the other TWO -BEDROOM Wanderers. TOWNHOUSES Most often held in conjunction with a fair, carnival, or some other fund § raising event, refreshments are available along the trail A and at checkpoints along the route. Because of the non-competetive nature of y the walk, Wanderers may register and begin their trail anytime between 8AM and 3PM. Wandering trails are always circular in nature and bring you back to where your car is parked. Thw AWA is the brainchild of Robert Yeak- ley, Myerstown, U.S.A.F. retired, who first became aware of the pleasure of Wandering during a tour of duty in Germany. Returning to the states, he determined to bring the concept with him. Since its initial Wandering endeavor two years ago, AWA has conducted over thirty of these events. Two more are scheduled in upcoming weeks. The Reading Chapter of AWA will conduct a 10 kilometer walking event on Sunday, Sept. 9 in the Wernersville area. The registration point will be the Heidelberg School on Galen Hall Rd. south of Werners- ville. This event will feature a 9 mile bicycle course as well as the 6.2 mile walking trail. On Saturday, Sept. 15th, the United Campus Minis- tries will conduct a 10 kilometer walking event at Millersville State College and along the Conestoga Creek. Registration for this event will be held at the Student Memorial Center on the MSC campus. In the true European tradition, the events will take place in any weather conditions. There is no rain date. The public is invited to attend. For more information, contact AWA at 717-866-4383.
