SCENTED SILK ROSES
The local Civil Defense
organizations had no Geiger
counters during the TMI
incident, it has been
learned. All the counters
were removed about a year
ago.
The instruments had been
kept in fallout shelters as
part of the standard equip-
ment, but were removed on
the orders of the state
government. They are own-
ed by the goverment. The
reason was according to
Paul Leas, County Civil
Defense director, ‘‘pilfer-
age.” Too many had been
snitched.
Despite the lack of Geiger
counters for Civil Defense,
local fire companies had
them, according to Leas.

Geiger counters were
missing during TMI,
but others were in reserve
The County Civil Defense
lent dossimeters to all local
police departments during
the accident, Leas added.
Marietta Civil Defense
director Bill Breckline told
the Times that he has his
own personal Geiger Count-
er, a ‘‘really perfect unit.”
He also has 8 certified
users.
Paul Leas said that, if a
serious radiation release
had occurred, all Civil
Defense units would have
gotten Geiger counters
quickly. (Geiger counters
are useless in detecting very
low-level radiation such as
was in this area during the
accident.)
