Sgt. Englert bandages a tyke
Sgt. Englert’s visit cut
short by
radiation release
by Jennifer L. Douglas,
Teacher Aide
Friday morning, March
30th, at Zion Lutheran
Nursery School in Marietta
was charged with excite-
ment. That was the
morning Sergeant Stephen
Englert of the Marietta
Police Department came to
visit. Sgt. Englert was in
school in answer to a call
for a community helper to
talk to the children about
his job and how a police-
man is everyone's friend.
Sgt. Englert showed the
children the use of a night-
stick: of course, it’s usually
reserved for unruly big
guys but on Friday the big
guy was only pint-size.
Next he demonstrated the
use of handcuffs, no easy
task when you're dealing
with 20 pairs of very small
wrists. Other things the
children found fascinating
were Sgt. Englert’s gun,

bullets, walkie-talkie, tear
gas and badge. Sgt.
Englert explained how all
these things were used and
also the danger involved if
used improperly.
The children asked Sgt.
Englert questions about his
cruiser so he took the
children to the parking ‘lot
and showed them all the
things his trunk contained
and told why they were
there—such as first aid kit,
broom, tire chains, fire ex-
tinguisher, tow chains, pry
bar, blankets, and door
opener. He also showed
them how the sirens and
radios operate.
The first aid kit seemed
to be the most fascinating
item in the cruiser trunk,
so Sgt. Englert bandaged a
make-believe head wound.
That same bandage then
got passed around like a
fancy hat everyone wanted.
to try on.
Sgt. Englert’s visit ended
very quickly after the fire
sirens sounded and a
mother arrived informing
us of trouble at TMI.
I'm sure the parents,
children, Mrs. Ronan
(teacher) and myself will
easily forget the day
Sergeant Englert came to
school.
