Shelling Bee at Beahm Jr. High
a old-fashioned shoot-
out occurred at Beahm Jr.
High in Mount Joy on
Friday afternoon. when
twenty-three students par-
ticipated in the annual
district spelling bee. The
sixth, seventh and eighth
graders competing repre-
sented five grade schools
besides ‘the junior high.
They qualified by being
finalists in preliminary
spelling bees held in March
in their respective build-
ings.
After seven complete
rounds the field of twenty -
three was reduced to five.
In the eighth round Ernie
Lapp of Kraybill’s Menno-
nite School was eliminated
when he misspelled the
word ‘‘elegance’’. In the
following round ‘‘familiari-
ty’’ felled Scott Sipling, the
only seventh grader left in
the field. And then there
were three.
The three eighth grade
girls remaining huddled
closely together on the
stage, each one cautiously
approaching the micro-
phone when it was her tufn
to spell. Each girl remained
accurate as the firing of
words continued into the
thirteenth round. Donna
Watto met her nemesis on
the word ‘‘indefensible’’.
And then there were two.
Lori Harvey and Grace
Snyder both had trouble in
the fourteenth round when
neither could spell ‘‘jabot’’
(a pleated frill of cloth or
lace attached down the
center front of a blouse or
dress) so the bee contin-
ued. :
Finally in the seven-
teenth round Grace missed
the word ‘‘lozenge’’, and
Lori then spelled the same
word right. She needed to
Pvt. Flowers
spell only one more word
correctly to be declared the
champion. Miss Catherine
Zeller, the pronouncer for
the bee and former head of
the English Dept. at
Donegal, uttered the word
‘““maintenance’’. Lori, after
a moment's pause, an-
nounced ‘‘M-A-I-N-T-E-
N-A-N-C-E’’. And then
there was one!
After a long, thunderous
ovation from the attentive
Beahm student body, fac-
ulty and guests, Lori was
declared champion of the
1979 Donegal District Spell-
ing Bee. Lori is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Harvey, R.D.1,
Mount Joy. Runner-up,
Grace Snyder, who chal-
lenged the champion ad-
mirably, is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Snyder
of Snyder Road, R.D.2,
Mount Joy.
Both of these girls will
participate in the county
spelling bee sponsored by
the Lancaster Intell, which
will be held on Friday
evening, April 27th, at the
Manheim Township Middle
School. In case one of them
can’t attend, Donna Watto
will participate. Donna is
the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. James Watto, R.D.1,
Marietta.
