December 20, 1978 DID YOU HEAR? Mary Jane Demmy of Marietta will have a part in the Actor’s Company pro- duction of ‘Our Town’’ at the Fulton Opera House in March. James Pritchett will star in the production. §88 Shelby Chunko and her mother Elizabeth, both of Mount Joy, have a strange coincidence with their birthdays. Both were born on January 19. That in itself isn’t too unusual—the odds of a mother having a child on her birthday are 1/365. But the the digits in their ages reverse every 11 years as well. Elizabeth was 27 when she had Shelby. When Elizabeth was 30, Shelby was 3. When Elizabeth was 41, Shelby was 14. This happens every 11 years; 52 and 25 was the last time. 63 and 36 will be the next. For this paftern to emerge, a mother must give birth when her age is a multiple of 9: 18, 27, 36, 45, or 54. The chance of this is (about) 1/9. The chance of Elizabeth and Shelby’s situation with birthdays happening is, roughly, .0003—three times in ten thousand. This figure is gotten by multiplying 1/9 by 1/368. §§§ Marine Private Mark A Carter, the son of Walter F. and Margorie A. Carter of 2nd and Market Streets, Bainbridge, has reported for duty with the 2nd Marine Division at the Camp Lejeune, NC, Marine Corps Base. Dur- ing the week of December 19th the Princeton Ballet (Audrey Estey, director) will perform The Nutcrack- er at the War Memorial Theater in Trenton and at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, NJ.
