Three Indians make soccer all-stars
Zeller
Two Indians made the
first string of the all-star
soccer team, and another
won honorable mention.
The trio are; Mike Zeller,
John Meyers and Rick
Coltier.
Mike Zeller helped cap-
tain the Indians to a
winning season and held
the league opponents to
just a little over 1 goal per
game. Being very rangy
in the goal area and
deflecting far corner shots
were his specialities. In
addition to this he posses-
sed a soccer sense, which
helped him to establish a
sound team defense. His
two way nature of being
relaxed, but at the same
time taking the game
seriously contributed to his
success. Many linemen
were continually disap-
pointed when Mike was
there to stop their sure
goals. The sound of
‘‘Keeper!’’ simply meant it
was all over.
Zeller was the recip-
jent -of the: John 8.
Shoemaker Soccer Memor-
ial Trophy presented at a
recent high school assem-
bly. The trophy is awarded
annually to the senior boy
of the varsity soccer team
that has displayed the
qualities of good sports-
manship, team spirit, moral
leadership and devotion to
his school and team.
Meyers
John Meyers worked
very hard at soccer all
year. He rates high as
being one of the most
versatile soccer players in
the league. Used as a
center fullback last year,
John was used principally
as a lineman and midfield-
er this year to.help bolster
‘the Indian offense. He
responded through his out-
standing playmaking and
by scoring 6 goals. He
performed excellently in all
areas and helped captain
the team to a better-than-
predicted season. Kicking
exceptionally well with both
feet, his shots were awe-
some. John was known to
speak softly and carry a big
kick! The same kick that
has led him to the top.
