Bernhardt to Timothy J. Porta, 101 No. Waterford Avenue, Mari- etta, took place on Satur- day, October 21, at 2:00 PM in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ Church, Lan- caster, with Monsignor Damian McGovern officiat- ing. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Leo Bernhardt, 1039 Columbia Avenue, Lancaster. She graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School and is employed by K-Mart in Lancaster. The bridegroom is the son of Merton E. Porta, Manheim, and Mrs. Joan Stevens, Maytown. He graduated from Manheim Central High School and is employed by Armstrong Cork Company’s Marietta carpet plant. Miss Sherri Lynn Brack- bill of Mount Joy was the maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Mrs. Catherine Nolt, sister of the groom, Robesonia; Mrs. Marvel Zahm, Lancaster; and Mrs. Linda Dunn, Lancaster. Junior bridesmaids were Miss Jennifer Lewis, Lan- caster, and Miss Julie Bernhardt, New Jersey. Flower girls were Miss Shari Porta, half-sister of the groom, Manheim, and Miss Jennifer Nolt, Robe- sonia. Ringbearer was Christopher Bernhardt, brother of the bride, Lancaster. Serving as best man was Douglas Shenenberger of Manheim. Ushers were Marvin Charles, Manheim; Mike Porta, brother of the groom, Manheim; Donald Heistand, Manheim; and Jerry Hinds, Mount Joy. Junior ushers were Patrick Bernhardt, brother of the bride, Lancaster, and Gregory Bernhardt, New Jersey. The couple will live in Marietta. We won’t apologise! Last week, an anony- mous Marietta grammarian sent us an envelope con- taining our corrections (from page 2) with the word ‘‘apologise’’ circled both times it appeared. The same thing hap- pened about a year ago when we published an apology for ‘mispelling”’ someone’s name. Now, while we were happy (well, willing) to admit that we had mis- spelled ‘‘misspelling,” we are not ready to admit our guilt in the more recent case. Although Webster's Abridged makes no bones about the zee in ‘‘apolo- gize,”” both the Oxford International and the Ran- dom House Unabridged dictionaries state flatly that “‘apologise’’ is an accept- able (though ‘‘chiefly Brit- ish”’) variant spelling. In fact, in The Queen’s English, it is preferred. . We conciously avoid such Britishisms as ‘‘har- bour,’’ ‘‘labour,’’ ‘‘syren,’’ “tyre,” ‘‘travelling,”’ and ‘‘draught.”” On the other hand, we do not hold Webster in undue re- verence. Noah Webster, after all, is the man who, according to legend, was once caught in the act of infidelity by his wife, who exclaimed; “Noah, I'm surprised at you.”’ Whereupon Webster rejoined, ‘‘No, madame. I am surprised. You are astonished.” Is this the sort of man whose spelling quirks should be followed as gospel by respectable jour- nalists? We think not. On the other hand, we'll try to use a zee (that’s ‘‘zed’’ in England and Canada, by the way) from now on.
