    July 12, 1978
July 4th in Marietta
Lancaster County had to
wait a long time for the
Marietta Jaycee’s annual
fourth of July bang, but the
show was worth waiting
for.
It rained on the third,
then it rained on the
fourth, then it rained on
the ‘‘rain date’’ last
Saturday.
In a lesser town. this sort
{ere comes another rubber arm.’’
of attack from the clouds
might have postponed the
show indefinitely, but it
takes more than a few
inches of water to frighten
the people of Marietta.+The
Jaycees fired a few
warning shots at the sky,
and prepared hold their
ground.
When the clouds realized
that the biggest barrage of
fireworks in the southern
half of the state was aimed
right at their puffy faces,
they retreated in a panic.
The giant crowd, unfazed
by the mud in Memorial
Park, was treated to a
bombardment which lasted
a full earth-shaking hour.
There were several ground
displays, including a
blazing American flag.
