Kids see ambulance
Last Thursday, the kids
at Riverview Elementary
School played ‘Ambulance’
with the real thing. The
Marietta Ambulance crew
visited the students in
grades one through six and
brought their ambulance
along. ‘
Charles Markley, train-
ing instructor of the
Marietta Ambulance Assoc.
explained how the alert for
an ambulance is received,
how to stabilize a patient
while in transport to the
hospital, and what the
duties of each member of
the crew are. Claudia
Sload, Barry Eppley and
Steve Englert, all members
of the ambulance crew,
assisted Mr. Markley in his
demonstration.
The Riverview students
asked a lot of questions
and had the chance to play
‘patient.’ One child was
placed on the litter and
- another was given oxygen.
The ambulance visited
the school as a part of the
program of special reading
classes taught by Mrs.
Carol Lambert and Mrs.
Elizabeth Smedley. ‘‘The
federally funded classes are
intended to motivate stu-
dents who have little
interest in reading.’’ the
instructors said. The child-
ren had earlier been visited
by a tractor-trailer and a
fire engine. '
The instructors in this
program, Mrs. Elizabeth
Smedley, Mrs. Carol Lam-
bert, and Mrs. Sally Hess
of Grandview Elementary
School, will attend the
ESEA Title I conference for
Federal Coordinators in
Philadelphia this week.

Norlanco Medical
Center Association
Seven years ago the
citizens of the Mount Joy
-Elizabethtown area were
deeply concerned about tiie
shortage of doctors within
our community. The costs
of setting up a medical
practice had become almost
prohibitive, and, knowing
the the problem would get
worse, interested local
people got together to do
something about it.
With the help of the re-
maining local doctors, and
the time, effort, and money
of thousands of people in
the community, Norlanco
Health Center was built.
The building, owned by
the Northwest Lancaster
County Medical Assciation,
is leased to the doctors who
practice there on a monthly
basis. The doctors equip-
ped the facility. Rental
income goes to pay for
preventive health care
programs and research in
the community and to
provide for future expan-
sion.
For now, the rent
($48,000 a year) is being
used to amortize the mort-
gage, pay taxes, and main-
tain the building. At the
present time there are 6
doctors, a physician’s assis-
tant, 2 dentists, 3 counsel-
ors, a dietician, a physical
therapist, and 2 biofeed-
back specialists there.
The Association is guid-
ed by a board of directors.
- One third of the board
members are from Mount
Joy, one third from E-town,
and one is a physician. Two
others must live within
eight miles.
The board now consists
of: Charles Ricedorf, pres.;
Glenn Irwin; Glen Fuller;
Charles Hershey; C.A.S.
Hollinger; Ethel Foley;
Leslie Blake; Thomas
Meckley; Robert Brain;
Milton Good, M.D.; Andy
Reymer; and Janice Ford.
Financial statements are
available to the public.
Any questions regarding
the Association and its
programs may be directed
to Glen Fuller, Exec.
Director, Norlanco Medical
Association, RD3 Elizabeth-
town, PA 17022; or call
653-8448 or 367-1009.
.. Walker: (cont.)
[continued from page 1]
Walker said that big
government results from
the people’s habit of
looking to Washington to
solve their local problems.
The U.S. government re-
sponds by passing a law
which is almost impossible
to repeal and applies
everywhere forever, staying
in effect long after the
original local problem is
gone.
In response to questions
Walker said that he votes
according to his consti-
tuents’ wishes about 75%
of the time, and the rest of
the time according to his
own mind. Some bills
involve secret information
or emergencies, he pointed
out.
He also told the group
that writing a letter is the
best way to influence your
congressman. Signing a
petition with S50 others
doesn’t count as much in
the legislator’s mind, he
said.
