Girls’ 1st basketball banquet “We've started a tradi- tion at Donegal this year— a tradition that will end with a state championship team.”’ ‘““‘One of these years, we're going to have a 6-19 season, and I hope you give the girls a banquet that year, too.” —two comments at last week’s first annual Donegal High School Girl’s Basket- ball Banquet. The first banquet ever held for a DHS girls’ basketball team attracted 103 people to Hostetter’s Banquet Hall last Wednes- day. The event got plenty of financial support from local business: trophies, door prizes, gifts and corsages. Obviously, the whole community is proud of the team, which has trans- formed itself from the biggest loser in its section into a really formidable team in just three years of competition. The guest speaker, E-town College women’s coach Yonnie Kauffman, talked about the exploding nationwide interest in women’s basketball, and added, ‘‘I'm sure everyone in Donegal School District is aware of what’s happen- ing to the sport, after the season you just had.” ““There’s a growth of interest in women’s sports across the board, and basketball is in the forefront of that change,” she said. Kemp Zangari was master of ceremonies. ““They wanted Howard Cossell,”’ he said, ‘‘but I was free.”’ (At this point, a member of the audience commented that America would rejoice if Mr. Zangari replaced Cossell on national television immediately.) Trophies were handed out to every girl on the varsity and JV squads. Coach Bill Earhart invented a few awards of his own, like ‘‘most ferocious- looking player.’ Special recognition went to Mr. Earhart, J.V. coach Barb Reuter, Mrs. Kelly the bus driver, Mrs. Wert the scorekeeper, and to statis- ticians, managers, banquet committee, parents and friends. Guests included Mr. & Mrs. Hallgren, Mr. & Mrs. Drenner, Mr. & Mrs. West, Mr. & Mrs. Armold and Mr. & Mrs. Depoe. They were recog- nized for their support of all athletic activities and the encouragement they gave to team members.
