Some members of the Times staff did not feel that St. Patrick’s Day could bé adequately celebrated in this area without a word from ‘‘that outstanding Irishman,’’ former Marietta Mayor Barney McDevitt. Since Barney and Mrs. McDevitt are vacationing in Florida, the Times tele- phoned him down there at Princess Island near Haines City. Here is Barney's mes- sage for St. Patrick’s Day: **] certainly am going to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day down here. Tell everyone up there that Kitty and I are having a very good time down here, and we expect to be home April 1. ‘Tell all the good Irishmen up there to have one on me on St. Patrick's Day.” Barney's son Pat, who now lives in Klinesville with his wife Charlene and their two daughters, pro- vided the Times with his father’s address in Florida. Asked if he also had a message for St. Patrick's Day, Pat came up with an old Irish saying he had learned from his father: ‘*May your soul be in heaven ten minutes before the Devil knows you're dead.” ‘Birthdays, anniversaries Three new sections have been added to the Times this week: Birthdays Wedding Anniversaries Did You Hear’s “Did You Hear’s’’ are short personal items about people living in the Donegal School District area. All three new sections have been designed to bring Times readers more news about more people living in the area. The Susquehanna Times is starting a campaign to encourage all residents in the Donegal School District area to send in announce- ments of birthdays, wed- ding anniversaries, and other personal news about family, friends, and rela- tives. With more news about more people in the news- paper, the management of the Times hopes that more March 15, 1978 Friendship shows new firehouse plans to Mount Joy Council The Friendship Fire Company presented plans for its new firehouse to Mount Joy Borough Coun- cil last Monday night. The proposed new build- ing, designed by architect Robert Bishop of Rheems, is a three-story brick structure with smoked glass windows. Council granted the conditional use request after bringing up four points and being satisfied that the building, to be located on the corner of New Haven and David streets (where the con- demned old Catholic church is located), would not dis- rupt the neighborhood. Council first considered the question of water run -off. Borough Engineer Dan Gohn told them that this would not be a problem. As to the second. point, parking, council satisfied itself that adequate space had been provided for fire- men’s cars in the plans. Increased traffic caused by firemen coming to and from the proposed station was also considered, and was decided not to be a problem. Police Chief Bruce Kline said, ‘“‘It looks good from here.”’ Firemen will use Main Street and Marietta Avenue to get to the station. They will be discouraged from using Donegal Street. Borough manager Joe Bateman told council that DID YOU HEAR— That a dark-haired young man who wears horn- rimmed glasses has fallen for well-known blonde from Mount Joy. the new station would not violate zoning ordinances, the fourth question . about the building. He said that in his opinion, it would not hurt the neighborhood. In other action, Council amended the bike ordin- ance. Starting in June bike licenses, which now expire after two years, will last as long a the person register- ing the bike owns it. If a bike changes hands, it will have to be re-registered. The cost of the license will remain at $1.00. Council asked the police department to step up enforcement of the bike registration law. The new curfew law became official at the meeting and is now in force. More news on the Council meeting will be carried in next week’s Times.
