Resident Surveys will soon be distributed by mail to all Marietta Borough residents 18 years of age and older. The survey results and analysis will be public information. " The new survey is being developed by Paul Sonntag, Marietta Borough Planner, with the assistance of the Borough Council’s Planning Committee, Borough Plan- ning Commission, Lancas- ld January 18, 1978 ter County Planning Com- mission and interested citizens. Mr. Sonntag was recently hired by Marietta Borough as a Planner through the CETA Pro- gram. Marietta music man marches on Robert M. Berghaus, 281 W. Walnut St., Marietta, is shown above composing a march, a la John Phillips Souza. ~ Mr. Berghaus, who works at Rheems Shoe Products, has composed a march a year since 1962 on weekends. He wrote several in the 40’s also. The diffident Mr. Berghaus’s marches are loud and rousing pieces for full bands. They have been performed all over the county, and many are recorded. Although he writes only marches, Mr. Berghaus loves music of all kinds. The photo’s background shows several hundred of his perhaps 1000 albums. This entire room is devoted to music. He writes 20-odd scores, one for each instrument, entirely by hand. “The themes just come to me out of no- ~ where,” he says, “while I'm sitting quietly.”” He can play clarinet, slide trombone, and trumpet. Although he has little formal training, Mr. Berghaus has put much time into his art. While in the Army in the 40’s he went to harmony school, and latter learned about scoring parts from a former Marietta minister named Shoemaker (of the First U.M. Church). “Rev. Shoemaker Donegal Band Parents to hold scrap paper drive verview, or was a fine man.” says Berghaus. “He conducted a band here in Marietta.” Mr. Berghaus is now working on his 19th march, the “D.W.M.,”” named after Dale Warren Mumper of E-town. Mr. Berghaus has received several awards and plaques for his marches. RRR ERNE RNNN RRR NR RNY Be ready for spring Have your bike serviced now. x x 3 John’s Bi : ohn’s Bike Shop 1 W.
