The Interchurch Council, which is sponsoring the I" event, apologizes to the public for the incorrect information. Archery course Want to learn to be a straight shooter? You can, for only ten dollars, at Kinsey's Archery company starting on February 7th. Bow and arrows were used extensively by early man for hunting and warfare, but archery devel- oped to iis highest point in the first part of this millenium. In Japan, Zen archery was popular with the Samurai warriors, who used long asymetrical bows (the arrow was notched about '4 of the way along the string). In Medieval England, archery was a national fetish. Every man had to learn to shoot the bow by royal edict, and every town was required to maintain a practice range. Archery was the only sport permitted on Sundays. English superiority in archery was a large factor in many battles of that time, such as Poitiers and Agincourt. Crossbows were much more powerful than the English longbow (6 feet long), but less accurate. Archery’s resurgence as a sport began in 1545 when Roger Ascham wrote Toxo- philus (from the Greek toxon, bow, and philus, love). The Royal Toxo- philite Society was founded in 1790. The recently-invented bow with pulleys has revol- utionized the sport in the last few years. The course at Kinsey's will meet Tuesday nights from 7 to 9 PM. Equipment will be supplied. Instructor is Deb Metzger. The course is being sponsored by the Columbia YMCA Extension Program. Profits from the course will go to Extension youth pro- jects. Make checks payable to Lancaster YMCA, and hurry: only 20 people will be enrolled. Ti B . ¥ 2.
