NISSLEY Funeral Director East Main Street MOUNT JOY, PA Phone 653-1151 UNION NATIONAL MOUNT JOY BANK Mount Joy-Maytown Drive In, Walk Up Windows at Both Offices Open Saturday 8-11 a, m. x) ———— Jungle drums and a cowboy doctor Ben and Erma Gainer of Mount Joy, and Mel Scheuing and Dick Gallo of Maytown, recently went to Haiti for two weeks as volunteer workers for the Church of God. All four are members of the Maytown Church of God. The four local people worked at a mission far back in the jungle. They helped to build nurses’ quarters and a house for the missionary. Ben and the others also replaced rafters in the school building. The school teaches Haitians welding and machine shop skills. The old rafters were so eaten by termites that one man fell when a rafter col- lapsed under him. He broke a leg. While there they met Dr. Larry Mellon, of the very rich Mellons. Now in his sixties, Dr. Mellon gave up the decadent luxury of the city as a youth to be a cowboy in Wyoming. While poking cows, he met and married his wife. Later he travelled around the world with Albert Schweitzer looking for the place where Schweitzer’s now famous hospital most needed to be built. After this Mellon decided to become a doctor. Schweitzer told him he was too old (Mellon was then in his forties), but he went ahead and got his M.D. degree. Since then he has worked in Haiti. ‘‘He’s a great man,’’ says Ben Gainer, who also told us that Dr. Mellon spent his share of the for- tune on his work. The volunteers, along with 7 others from this part of the state, worked from sunrise to sunset except during the middle of the day, when 130 degree temperatures kept them in the shade. Left to right: Ben and Erma Gainer, Dick Gallo, and Mel Scheuing in Haiti. The school building with rotten rafters Voodoo drums through the night. The mission is trying to convert the Haitians from Voodoo, which is the pre- dominant religion on the island. Ben was in Haiti once before, last New Year’s Eve, which is a Voodoo holiday. He recalls that some of his group ‘were’ “scared to" death™ by the continuous beating of Haiti is very poor. Many people have TB; at one time the proportion was 85% of the population. Erma Gainer bagged TB pills for distribution while at the ‘mission —12,000 in one day.
