November 9, 1977 Welcome Wagon { Judy Miller and Judy Novinger present checks for $380 to Ann Milanoff of the Library. Cheri Dillow and Pat Burton are the local Welcome Wagon hostesses. by Sharon Roberts Welcome Wagon Clubs, also known as Newcomers Clubs, are found in cities and towns throughout the country. For some it is a ‘*halfway’’ house. The chance is there to meet new friends and familiarize oneself with the community and its activities —then go on to those other activities. For many, it is the social and civic organization they choose to stay with. The Mount Joy Welcome Wagon Club was organized in 1968 through the efforts of Phyllis Longenecker and other interested women. In the last nine years, the club has grown in member- ship from 7 to 60, with about 350 women enjoying the activities over the years. Many of the members are active in scouts, church groups, and school work. Varied and interesting programs are presented at the monthly meetings. Special interest groups —crafts, bridge, tennis, etc., meet during the month and special socials are planned throughout the year. The club is interested in the community of Mount Joy and tries to do its part in helping to support the various programs. Fund raising activities include hoagie sales, drawings, circus, rummage sales, bazaars, bake sales, and the book drive and sale have helped to raise over $2600 which has been donated to needy families, the ambulance fund, Meals on Wheels, Summer Play- ground Program, and the Mount Joy Library. Time is also donated —the 2nd floor of the Library was painted, and twice each month the women of the Schock Home are visited. The Mount Joy Welcome Wagon Club meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month. If you have moved to the Mount Joy area or moved within Mount Joy (one Mount Joy address to another) within the last six months, become engaged, are expecting or had a new baby, you are eligible and invited to join the club. For more information con- tact Nancy Penkunas 653-2127. The next meeting of the club will be held at Roth’s Furniture Store on Wed- nesday, November 16th at 7 PM. After a short meeting, representatives from various furniture, appliance, and rug com- panies will answer ques- tions on quality, decorat- ing, etc. during a tour of the store. The Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, November 12th is the first social of the year. For more information call Marianne Melleby. This is the first of several ‘Marianne has planned to help the men meet some new friends, too. Fund raising activities in progress are the drawing for the $50 gift certificate from Watt & Shand (winner to be announced at November meeting) and final preparation for the “Yuletide Magic’’ bazaar and bake sale scheduled for December 2nd and 3rd. All profits from these sales will go to the benefit of Community Programs. Anyone who has just moved to the Mount Joy area, become engaged or had a baby, or knows of someone who has, should contact the Welcome Wa- gon Hostesses —Cheri Dillow 653-1609 or Pat Burton 653-1963. They’ll be glad to hear from you. The 1977-78 year has plenty of fun and work scheduled on its calendar, and the Mount Joy Welcome Wagon Club will continue to be a contribut- ing part of the community, both in money and making people feel at home in our town.
