English United Presbyterian Church celebrates 155th anniversary -birthday cake made The congregation of the English United Presbyter- ian Church of Marietta celebrated their 155th anni- versary last Sunday. The church got its start in a brick building in Gay Street, completed in 1822, at the same time the church was formally organ- ized. This original structure was demolished in 1853. In 1854 the new church went into service. It was remod- eled in 1884, and a Sunday school building was added in 1889. A new bell and facing were added in 1909. John Winters, James Duquette, Maryann Spangler and Margaret Wood read the history of the church between hymns. The congregation finished the service by singing “Happy Birthday.’’ Mrs. Robert Henry baked a birthday cake for the church. She and Mrs. Albert Dettinger arranged the observance. The Presbyterians began their services in Marietta in 1814 in the Bell School House.
