Mr. and Mrs. Breneman with Beth Ann and Cory.
Local couple visit Sardinia
«Mr. and Mrs. Richard
Breneman, (Nancy and
Dick) 223 N. Barbara St.,
Mount Joy spent two weeks
on the island of La
Maddalena, Sardinia, visit-
ing with their daughter,
Pat and her family. Pat is
married to Navy man, SK2
Mike Eshleman, and they
have two children; Beth
Ann, 7, and Cory, 4 years
old.
Mike is stationed at the
NATO site while serving ir
the Navy.
While there, the Brene-
mans toured the islands,
where they visited the
birthplace of Napolean and
the tomb of Garibaldi, the
Italian Patriot. The family
spent two nights camping
on the lovely beaches
which, Nancy says, has a
fine gravel-like material
rather than sand. She also
said the gravel is much
Mount Joy
The Mount Joy Leisure
Club held their monthly
meeting recently with 112
members present. Follow-
ing the pledge of allegiance
to the flag, President Joe
Shaeffer called the meeting
to order. Anna Zerphey
read the minutes of the
previous meeting and Al-
meda Hostetter gave the
treasurers report. Ella
Germer of the Sunshine
Committee reported twelve
cards sent to the shut-ins.
Elizabeth Hassinger will
report for the Sunshine
Committee at the next

one’s hair as sand is prone
to do!!
They found the area free
from industrial problems,
since it is a sheep raising
and farming community.
The Mount Joy couple
found the people very
friendly. Especially after
the children let the natives
know Dick and Nancy were
““NONA and NONO’’,
which is Grandma and
Grandpa there.
Nancy said the young
people have a tremendous
respect for their elders and
it continues into the adult
years. They were im-
pressed by the fact that
there are no nursing homes
for the elderly and said the
family cares for each other.
They did find the people
were in a hurry all the
time, although they never

three meetings.
Birthdays and anniver-
saries were honored and
one new member, Rebecca
Wagner was presented to
the club. President Shaef-
fer repeated the final plans
for the two bus trips, the
one to the Great Adventure
Safari and Longwood Gar-
dens for October 15 and
October 17 to the Horse
Shoe curve. President
Shaeffer appointed Mr.
John Brown, Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Eby and Mr. and
Mrs. Frank LeVan to serve

people were hurrying to or
from.
The streets are very
narrow, they found, and
the only ‘‘big car’’ they
saw was one owned by the
Navy. Most cars were of
the Fiat or VW size. The
restaurants in La Madda-
lena serve a ‘lot of
spaghetti, seafood and
steaks’, and have never, to
Nancy's displeasure, heard
of ketchup or pepper.
The center of the social
life is in an area called the
"Red Square’’ where the
cafe owners move the
tables outside to the
sidewalks for drinking,
dining and, socializing.
The service is different
from ours in that they give
you a choice of entrees, but
you must accept the
vegetables of the day.
Prices are about the same

November 14 meeting are
Mr. and Mrs. Irving LeVin.
Plans are being made for
the Christmas dinner which
will be held at Hostetters
on December 14. At the
November meeting mem-
bers will be asked to sign
up for that dinner. The
November 14 meeting will
begin at twelve noon, the
men will serve the group,
and the chairman in charge
is David Stauffer. Follow-
ing the luncheon the group
will play bingo.

as ours in the U.S.A.
Nancy said their flights to
and from the islands were
delightful, despite some
“jet lag” and the surprise
at the airport in Rome. It
seems Nancy and Dick
were not aware of the
armed guards at that
particular airport.
The guards are there
with very visible weapons
but no one seemed to pay
any attention to them.
Nevrtheless, Nancy said
the sight of the guns was
rather foreboding.
Mike and Pat will be
home for a 30-day leave,
probably within another
year, before its off to
another tour of duty and
maybe another story on the
visit to some new, out of
the ordinary, vacation for

meeting the invocation was
given by Arthur Braun and
cake and coffee was
served. THe program for
the day were slides
presented by Grace and
Joe Shaeffer of their
covered bridge tour to
Europe.
Due to poor weather
conditions the bus trip to
the Horse Shoe curve was
canceled. Those who had
signed up for the trip will
recieve a refund at the
November meeting.
