Now the Mount Joy police get one half paid sick day per month. They are asking for one per month, and they want to be able to accumulate as much as 180 sick days. In other words, if an officer was very healthy and didn’t use his 12 days per year, they would accumulate over the years up to a total of 180 that he could take all at once, if he had a serious illness or accident. Chief Bruce Kline is not part of the negotiations. The other four officers are. Chief Kline may bargain with council later for his own benefits. Mayor Gingrich told us that the bargaining is a complex matter, because of the many factors involved. On the one hand, the taxpayers should get the most protection for their dollar. On the other, the police deserve a fair shake. How much protection is actually needed, what other police in the area are earning, and the average income of Mount Joy are all things to be considered. The police negotiator is officer Dale Good. The Borough’s advocate is Jim Heisey. Closed Wed.
