gifts for Mariettians
“It’s all right. You folks
haven't done anything
wrong.’
That’s the first thing
Tom Martin of the Mar-
shalltown Chamber of
Commerce said Friday af-
ternoon after he hopped
out of a police car and
approached the Pennsyl-
vania couple whose car had
been pulled over.
Rather than give the
driver a ticket, Martin,
chairman of the chamber’s
convention and tourism
program, proceeded to give
the couple gifts from local
businesses.
Once a month during the
summer, Martin and a local
policeman stop a car from
out of state, trying to
promote the city and show
its hospitality.
Free gas, food and lodg-
ing plus a movie ticket are
given to those stopped. The
couple receiving those gifts
Friday was Mr. and Mrs.
Melvin Heistand of Mariet-
ta, Pa., who were enroute
home after vacationing in
South Dakota.
Actually, giving the gifts
away was not as easy as
one might think. Policeman
Randy Gerber and Martin
tried giving the gifts away
twice before getting the
Heistands to pull over.
The persons in the first
car stopped were headed
for Manson and couldn’t
stay. The second time, with
the police car’s red lights
flashing and siren blaring,
Gerber and Martin took
after a car from Missouri.

Besides landscaping their

made several changes on
the house over the past

cleaned, removed the porch
and painted the trim.
Although they are unsure
of the age of the house,
they know that the rear
portion, which is now used
