Experimental Fish farm
to be built near here on river
Kraft, Inc., PA Power &
Light Company, and the
Franklin Institute plan an
experimental project to
study fish farming in the
warm-water outflow of a
utility plant.
The research study will
take place at Brunner Iis-
land Steam Electric Station
on the Susquehanna River,
about 12 miles south of
Harrisburg. Kraft is leasing
a site from PP&L, immed-
iately adjacent to the coal-
fueled power plant that
uses river water in its
operation. It discharges
warm river water, which
will be diverted through
the planned production
area that will be used to
grow fish.
“This project has three
main benefits,”’ according
to Dr. Jerry E. Proctor,
project manager. ‘‘First,
because fish are the most
efficient convertors of feed
into animal protein, we will
be trying to produce an
optimum supply of a high
quality food for people at
the lowest possible cost.®
‘“Second, we will be
utilizing the waste energy
of the power plant—the
warm-water discharge—for
productive purposes.”
‘““And, third,”’ he said,
“we will be recycling—in
the form of feed for the
fish—some of the by-pro-
ducts from present food
operations. These by-pro-
ducts may include mater-
ials such as whey, whey
products and cheese rind.”’
