Holy
Cow!
The Florin Church of the
Brethren is going to ship
18 heifers to Africa to help
feed the people there. To
make the idea of the gift
more meaningful to kids,
two of the heifers will be
grazing on the church lawn
next Sunday morning,
during services. Everyone
is welcome to attend this
special event.
New train
schedules
Lower fares and a greatly
increased schedule have
now made ‘‘Silverliner’’
train service more attrac-
tive to residents in the
Mount Joy area.
Fares have been totally
restructured. Usage of the
new services will determine
their continuation.
There are now bargain
rates on off-peak hours and
weekends, and 10- and
46-trip discount tickets.
There are three trains to
Harrisburg before 10:00
a.m., and a total of nine
return trains, one as late as
9:00 p.m. Travel time is
only 25 minutes.
Weekend service is also
improved, with trains all
day. Under the old sche-
dule, there was only one
return stop in Mount Joy.
For business, sight-see-
ing or shopping, there are
three trains eastward leav-
ing Mount Joy for Lancast-
er and Philadelphia in the
morning. The first of these,
although omitted in error
from the current Amtrak
public timetable, leaves
Mount Joy at 7:42 a.m.
In addition, there are six
other eastward trains stop-
‘ping at Mount Joy later in
the day, offering conven-
ient schedules to attend the
theatre, sports events, etc.
Area residents have nine
choices of trains on which
to return, leaving Philadel-
phia as late as 10 p.m. or
Lancaster at 11:14 p.m.
The travel time between
Philadelphia and Mount
Joy is less than 90 minutes,
and from Lancaster, Only
11 minutes.
The Mount Joy train stop
is near the center of town
one block south of Main
Street (Rt. 230) on Marietta
Street (Rt. 141). Although
the former passenger sta-
tion building has been
removed, free parking is
available where it stood,
adjacent to stairs leading to
the trackside platforms.
Because there is no
longer a ticket agent on-
duty, passengers may eith-
er pay their fares on the
train or use tickets pur-
chased in advance at sta-
tions where agents are on
duty, such as at Harris-
burg, Lancaster, and Phil-
adelphia. : .
