Julio Morales is state special olympics champ The Area Special Olym- pics were held on May 7 at Manheim Township High School. Mark Shope, Julio Mor- ales, Dulio Hernandez and Jeff Girard represented Donegal and competed against students from In- termediate Units 12, 13, 14 and 1S. Over S00 students participated in the meet. The four boys gave Donegal a first in the 440 relay. Individual honors were: Mark Shope (16 and older division)—I1st high jump; Julio Morales (16 and older division)—I1st mile run, 2nd softball throw; Dulio Hernandez (14-15 division)— 1st 50 yd. dash, 2nd high jump, 2nd softball throw; and Jeff Girard (14-15 division)—3rd 220 yd. dash, 3rd high jump. In this meet, Dulio and Julio qualified for the state meet. Elementary students par- ticipating were Gary Wil- kinson and Serna Wilt. Gary placed 2nd in the 220 yd. dash while Serna plac- ed 1st in the 220 and 1st in the S50 yd4 dash. Tony Barrett was ‘in attendance but was unable to partici- pate due to an illness. The State Special Olym- pics were held on May 24, 2S and 26 at Edinboro State College. Julio Morales became Donegal’s first state champion in Special Olym- pic Competition as he was victorious in the mile run. He also captured medals by placing 2nd in the S50 yd. dash and 2nd in the softball throw (16 and older division). Dulio Hernandez brought 10me three medals in his age division. He placed 2nd in the S50 yd. dash, 2nd in the softball throw and 4th in the high jump. The teachers involved in training and supervision were Kermit M. Chapman’s softball team wins The Lancaster County Women’s Softball League played last week. Chap- man’s team was victorious in three consecutive games, defeating Bainbridge, Heis- tand’s and Longeneckers. Chapman’s defeated Bainbraidge 21-1. Barb Houseal was the winning pitcher. Kathy Flowers and Eileen Heisey had a home run and a triple respective- ly. chapman’s overpowered Heistand’s 11-2 in their second game of the week. Sharon Redkay hit a home run and Eileen Heisey had a triple. Longeneckers were de- feated by Chapman’s by a minor margin of 12-11. Lori Van Note was a prominent hitter for Chapman’s with a double.
