St. Mark’s to honor 50-year members,
help hungry
by W. Richard Kohler
St. Mark’s United Meth-
odist Church, Mount Joy,
will observe its Annual
Anniversary Sunday, May:
15th at the Morning Wor-
ship Service (10:15 a.m.)
At this celebration the S50-
year members of the con-
gregation receive special
recognition. This year
seven persons are Golden
Anniversary Celebrants.
They are Mr. Charles
Webb, Miss Edna Shelly,
Miss Dorothy Shelly, Mr.
Victor Engle, Mrs. Ruth
Mateer, Mrs. Ruth Gruber,
and Mrs. Elsie Myers.
One of the unusual fea-
tures of this year’s worship
experience will be special
music by an Alumni Choir
consisting of the present
Chancel Choir and many
former members who will
join them for the singing of
“I Will Sing of My Re-
deemer”’ and ‘‘How Great
Thou Art.”” This choir is
under the direction of Mrs.
Anna Mae Williamson.
In the afternoon of the
15th, volunteers from the
congregation will be a part
of a caravan of cars and
trucks which will be taking
a load of potatoes and
foodstuffs to Southside
Center on South Street in
Philadelphia for distribu-
tion to the poor and needy.
This will be the third time
in the last few years that
St. Mark’s Church has
undertaken such a mission
to deal with the problem of
hunger in the inner city.
The first such venture, at
which time 20 tons of pota-
toes, 700 pounds of flour,
and $1,500 worth of canned
goods were made available,
brought the attention of
Philadelphia city officials
and the media and was
hailed as an outstanding
gesture of Christian bro-
therhood and practical
charity. The Rev. Mr.
Randy Jones, pastor of the
Southside Center, suggests
that these food caravans
really do make an effective
impact on the poor of the
city.
Anyone in the commun-
ity interested in contribu-
ting toward this unique
ministry of St. Mark’s
Church, please send your
gifts to the church office at
27-29 East Main Street,
Mount Joy. They will go
directly toward the South-
side Social Ministry.
