977 mn C5 - 24 d May 11, 1977 Robert Weiss will represent PA in national conference Fifty-two students and eight advisors from the three Lancaster County Area Vo-Tech Schools part- icipated in the State VICA Conference held in Seven Springs, April 27, 28, and 29. The ten top students in the state, in each event, ° selected by local and then by district competition, tested their leadership skills as well as their trade skill abilities against one another. Twenty-three students represented the Mount Joy Vo-Tech School as dele- gates and in seven areas of competition. Three of these students won outstanding awards. Robert Weiss, of Hempfield, won a first place gold medal in Mach- ine Shop. Robert will re- present the state of PA in the National VICA Confer- ence to be held in Cincin- nati, OH on June 20-25. Mike Carroll, a Donegal student who attends the Mount Joy Vo-Tech per- formed his final official duties as State VICA Presi- dent at this Conference. Lancaster County can be proud of the outstanding leadership displayed by all of these students. King and Queen of the Fair contest Thirteen girls and boys have been entered in the King & Queen of the -Fair contest sponsored by the Marietta Recreation Assoc- iation. Sponsored by the Mount Joy Area Historical Society, the show is sche- duled for Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22 at the W. I. Beahm Junior High School, Poplar Street, Mount Joy. Some exhibitor space is available and may be re- served’ by calling Mrs. Warren Heisey or Mrs. William Barto. In addition to the hobby and craft exhibitions, two special features will be sponsored. Proceeds from the contest will be used to underwrite the costs of operating the summer play- ground activities at Memor- ial Park. All contestants will receive prizes. showing of a reel of forty-year-old local movies. The films had been used in the 1930's for an annual program of hometown movies. The film will be shown every ninety min- utes throughout both days. Another special corner will feature Mount Joy antiques and collectibles. This unusual double rose is ‘‘the first sport (mutation) of this type I've ever seen growing in a pot, and I've been around roses all my life,” according to Earl Marley of Columbia Hardware in Marietta. The rose was on display outside Earl's store last week when the Times got this photo. Earl explained that this variety of rose is one of three 1977 All American varieties, the top of the line. Roses of this high quality (ordinarily not doubled) take up to ten years and cost thousands of dollars to develop. Once bred, the strains are patented.
