Mariettians are hoping for federal money to re- store a local church which they feel is an historic landmark. ] The ‘‘Advisory Commit- tee of the Local Govern- ment Historic Preservation Subcommittee’’ rated the request of Marietta Boro Council and the Marietta Restoration Associates sixth highest priority among the historic preser- vation programs. The Lancaster County Community Development Authority recommended the amount of $85,000 be application to the Depart- ment of Housing and Ur- ban Development. Before the program may be funded, the County’s application must pass through state and local A-95 clearing houses, and Drawing by Linda Ross Marietta Boro council Marietta Boro Council adopted the street repair schedule presented by Jim Sanchez (a representative of Sacra Engineers) at its Tuesday night session. Longenecker and Mulberry Streets will be resurfaced after curbs are installed by property owners. August 15 is the deadline. Council will advertise for bids by June 1S, review contracts and award same by September 13 with actual work begin- ning the 26th and complet- ed by November 13. Reconstruction of Front Street from Perry to Water- ford Ave. calls for curbs to be installed prior to August 15; advertising for bids April 14; and awarding contract at the May 10 council meeting. Separate sections of curb will be installed on the south side of Front Street by the boro by July 1. Liqued fuel and federal monies would pay for both projects. Expenditures amounting to $1850 were approved for equipment for the police cruiser. Items would in- clude a radio, light system, fire extinquisher, gun rack, night sticks, siren, etc. Voted to buy a duplicating machine, a mower, and new locks for the park. Property owners with irregular sidewalks and broken curbs will be noti- fied to repair them. Mayor J Robert Flanagan proclaimed May 2 to 28 as ‘‘clean up, paint up, fix up’”’ month. He is investigating a plan to have specific items ot trash removed by boro trucks. Violators of ordinances will be prosecuted after June 1. Earl Roberts’ resignation from council was received with regret. He mentioned the time factor as the reason for resigning. John Hinkle, John Reuter and Dave White were named as a committee to find a replacement. Persons with stray dog complaints should notify the dog catcher, Paul Raber. Permission was granted Outdoor art show for residents of the 200-300 block of W. Market Street to conduct the 3rd annual block sale on Saturday, May 21, at 9 a.m. Thirty fire calls were reported for the year. Parking meter receipts amounted to $305.83 with meter fines totaling $641. Two building permits were issued for the month. There were sixteen zoining enquiries. One hundred and twenty-five incidents were reported by the police department. Children’s art A children’s outdoor art show will be one of the attractions of the Memorial Day weekend in Mount Joy. The art show is sponsored by the Mount Joy Bicentennial Commis- sion. The show will be held May 29 at the Mount Joy Memorial Park. The art show is open to children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Cate- gories include: 1. collage; 2. pencil; 3. crayon; 4. watercolor; S. tempera paint; and 6. printing (block and gad- get). Drawings may be in any of the mediums listed above and on any type paper, but should not be larger than 11 by 14 inches. Entries will be exhibited and judged at the show. Judging will be done by school grades: kindergarten to third grade and fourth to sixth grade. Ribbons will be awarded for prizes and the names of the winners will appear in the local papers. All entries should be taken to the Mount Joy Library and placed in the containers provided. It is most important that the artist’s name, address, age, school, and grade appear on the Back of the drawing. Deadline for en- tering is May 23. Research on the old Zion Church, now called ‘‘Union Meeting House’’, revealed that the original door was on the south side of the brick structure and that a gallery and bell tower were added at a later date. With these additions removed the structure would appear similar to the sketch. The Marietta Restoration Associates hope to lease the building from Marietta Boro Council and proceed with a restoration project. Monies received from fed- eral and state government would be used to improve the grave stones (which have detiorated since 1857, when additional burials were terminated by boro officials), restore sagging walls, and for interior preservations. | = oF |50-LBS.
