The formula for home- made vanilla Susquehanna River ice cream goes like this: 2%2 cups sugar 4 eggs 3 tablespoons vanilla 1 or 2 cans of milk 1 quart of Joe Wivell’s milk Mix ingredients in an ice cream maker. Pack river ice and salt around the mixture, and start crank- ing. (The Portners use Wivell’s milk because ‘‘He’s got good-looking cows.”” You can use another farmer’s milk, but remember, it isn’t Susquehanna River ice cream if you don’t use Susquehanna River ice.)
