...Shifters
(continued from Page 1) *
In late 1922 or early
1923, he moved his rest-
aurant to 400 Locust St.
There were big pictures
outside the restaurant. One
showed a hefty man. The
picture was captioned *‘I
eat here.”” The other show-
ed a skinny man whose
caption was, ‘I don’t.”
Tuffie’s son, T.W.
Olena, Jr., showed us a
menu from his father’s
restaurant. Shifters were
not listed on the menu
(they hadn’t been invented
yet), but ham sandwiches
sold for 5 cents each. The
menu dates from around
1914.
A 1942 menu shows the
effect of inflation. A ham
sandwich cost 10 cents.
Shifters appear on the 1942
menu. The price: 10 cents.
T. W. Olena, Jr., has identified all the people in the
picture of Tuffie Olena’s restaurant which we ran last
week. Tuffie is the man in the forground. The others
are, from left to right; Mary Olena (Tuffie’s wife);
Whonetta Olena (wife of Tuffie’s son, T. W. Olena, Jr.);
Helen Burgentine; May Smith; Sydney Olena. (Tuffie’s
daughter); and Lillian Griffith.

age were heavy, but no one
was serious hurt in the fire.
Jeff Lighty, Bainbridge,
was taken to the Columbia
Hospital for back injuries
after falling from the roof.
He was later discharged
and again started to battle
the fire. William Smith,
Jr., was asleep in the
house when the fire broke
Messiah College and is
under the direction of Ron
E. Long, Director of Music
Ministries at Messiah Col-
lege and also the Director
of Admissions.
The musical is sponsored
by the College as on

people and is presented
through the Christ’s Cru-

out, but he escaped in
time. The fire was also
discovered by Marietta fire-
man Pete Armold, who was
passing by.
The fire was probably
caused by an overheated
pipe.
A neighbor, Mrs. Paul
Rettew, Jr., made coffee
for the firefighters and
provided shelter for Mrs.
Smith.
