and each afternoon he left
again for the pool for the
Troop’s free swim so he
could practice what he
learned that morning.
Towards the end of the
week he returned to the
site and seemed disap-
pointed, after talking with
him I found that he was
just about completed with
the actual swimming part
of the Merit Badge. His
problem was he had to
recite the ‘‘Safe Swim
Defence Plan’’, he and 1
went over this about a
dozen times before supper
and as 1 walked through
the Patrol Sites that even-
ing I could hear him going
over and over the plan to
himself as he fell asleep.
And again in the morning
as he was getting up he
continued to go over the
safe swim defence plan to
himself.
As he headed to the pool
that morning, I went for
that morning cup of coffee
at the Leader’s gathering
spot and talked with the
Program Director and ex-
plained how much this
Scout has been working for
this Merit Badge and the
situation with his ability to
recite the safe swim de-
fence plan as the water
front staff expected. Thank
God, we had an under-
standing Program Director
who made a fast trip to the
pool.
Saturday morning, going
through the almost 200
completed Merit Badge
applications from the Pro-
visional Troop, I found one
for the Swimming Merit
Badge for this Scout and I
felt good, all over, for this
one single completed Merit
Badge meant as much to
this Scout as for some of
the others in the troop who
completed four or five
Merit Badges.
When the scarcastic
question rises this year,
“Why spend a week of
your vacation, at Scout
Camp?’’ this one illustra-
tion leaves the questioner
with much to think about
and leaves me with many
pleasureable and enjoyous
thoughts from one of the
best vacations which 1 have
had.
