Page 4 - SUSQUEHANNA TIMES Missionary to speak at St. Mark’s UM Miss Elsie Hugo is one of more than half a dozen missionaries supported in part by the people of St.Mark’s United Metho- dist Curch, Mount Joy. On Sunday, November 28th, Miss Hugo will spend much of the day sharing her life and work with the congregation as mission colleague and interpreter. Addressing herself to the Church’s mission in India, ‘where she works at the El- len Thoburn Cowen Mem- -orial Hospital in Kolar, Miss Hugo will speak at 9a.m. to the entire Chil- dren’s Sunday School in the Fellowship Hall. At the 10:15a.m. Worship Hour she will bring greetings to the congregation and share an inspirational word. Then, in the evening at 7p.m., she will bring her complete presentation of the Indian work before the church using audio-visual materials to enhance it. Born in Worchester, Mass., Miss Hugo grew up in Rutherford, New Jersey. She attended the Hacken- sack Hospital School of Nursing and served as a staff nurse there for two years. During World War II, she was a nurse at an American Red Cross Hos- pital in England. Later she was¢ in the Army Nurse Corps serving first in England and then in Bel- gium. She attended Tea- chers College of Columbia University receiving a Bachelor of science degree and then a master of arts degree. She was with the Visiting Nurse Service in New York City from 1947 to 1955. From 1956 to 1965 she was an assistant Direc- tor of Nursing for the Dept. of Health in Philadelphia. She entered missionary service in 1968, having first heard about ETCM Hospi- tal in her home church in Philadelphia. After visiting India she decided she wanted to be a part of it and took the steps toward a missionary career.
