Pastor Hoover was invited to fill in for a few weeks. The congregation swelled from 1 to 8 as old members returned. Pastor Hoover was asked to stay. That was 6 years ago. Today, the average attend- ance at the new church is over 100. Pastor Hoover doesn’t care very much about the size of member- ship. ‘““We don’t drive for membership, because that’s not what’s going to get you into Heaven,’’ he says. ‘We believe in being open to the Spirit of God. We don’t care if people belong to another church.” It was the faith and enthusiasm of the congre- gation - not their numbers or wealth— that built the. new church. The congregation cut costs by providing free labor. They painted, install-- ed insulation and did elect- rical work. Whenever the budget became too tight, enough hard-earned money sud- denly appeared to cover costs. It seems fair to say that Pastor Hoover built a church from scratch, but he doesn’t see it that way. He prefers to.give the credit to God and the congregation. **God spoke to me and used me as their leader,” he says. ‘“‘Everybody was right willing to jump in and help.” Members of the building committee especially de- serve credit, Pastor Hoover says. They are: Glenn Wonders, Edward Abernathy, Bill Herr, John: Gusler, John Smeal and Paul Gutschall.
