Hallgren, superintendent, Donegal School District announced today that the Grandview Elementary School has been selected as one of the 326 schools throughout the country to be part of a nationwide. study of com- pensatory education. Mr. Hallgren said that this is the largest and most thorough study of basic education ever undertaken. The major purpose of the study is to try to find out which kind of compensatory education is most effective in improving children’s reading and mathematics skills. The schools in the study are a representative sample of the nation’s schools. In the fall and spring, all children in the school will be given achievement tests in reading and mathe- matics, a test of practical achievement, and a mea- sure of their attitudes to- ward reading and mathe- matics. Data will also be collected on the amount and kinds of instruction re-. ceived by students, as well as the instructional prac- tices of school personnel. Data will be collected for three successive years so that longitudinal progress can be determined. In reporting results, both the schools’ and the parti- cipants’ confidentiality will be assured by a system whereby each participant is identified by number, and the names of the students involved are held at the school. Mr. Hallgren said, “Under this system, the school has the names of participants, while the re- search organization has the student identification num- bers with no names. Thus, the research organization cannot report on individual participants by name.”’ The study is sponsored by the U.S. Office of Education, and is being conducted by the System Development Corporation of Santa Monica, CA. Indian booters scalp Lampeter-Strasburg Last Monday the D.H.S. Soccer Team took to the field against a tough L.S. opponent in its first league game. In the first quarter Sang Noua, Kris McCue, and Jake Sherk made numerous shots at the goal. Donegal controlled most of the play in the second quarter, but the game remained a scoreless tie. Ryan O’Leary lead an attack on the goal in the third quarter, but the In- dians were still unable to score on the L.S. goalie. Finally, in the fourth quarter Kris McCue, assis- ted by Henry Klugh, boot- ed home the winning goal for the Indians. The J.V. team was lead to a 2 to 1 victory over the L.S. J.V.’s by Jon Myers who scored both goals. In its game with Solanco, Donegal continued its win- ning streak with a S to 0 shut-out of the Mule’s team. The first goal came on a penalty shot by Kris McCue with 8:05 left in the first quarter. Ron Meckley assisted by Jon Hayman scored with 4:55 left in the second quarter. The second half brought rain drenching the field, the players, and the fans. Donegal’s third score came on McCue's second penalty kick in the beginning of the third quarter. McCue got his third goal in this game with 4:35 left in the final quarter. Steve Eno saw his New SICO Robert P. McGinley, the SICO Co. in Mount Joy and Roy Meyer of H. L. Meyer, Inc., Cleona, have been elected to the board of way through a host of muddy Solanco players to score the final goal and end the soggy game. The J.V.’s also wiped out Solanco-by a score of 4 to 0 with Marc Henri Bataille and Randy Fellenbaum each scoring one goal and Jon Myers scoring his usual two goals per game. On Friday, September 17th the Indians of Donegal added another victory to their record. Although Donegal controlled the first quarter, the tides turned and Penn Manor dominated the play of the second quarter. Kris McCue struck with lightning speed to score just seconds into the second half. McCue scored again in the same quarter. With that goal, Kris estab- lished a new all-time scor- ing record at D.H.S. Con- gratulatons!!! Mark Weid- man added one more goal in that quarter. Eric Frey of Penn Manor opened the fourth quarter with the Comets’ only score of the game. Randy McCoy top- ped off Donegal’s rout of the Comets’ team with a goal making the score 4 to 1. As usual the J.V. team exhibited excellent playing ability defeating the Comets 4 to 1. Marc Henry Bataille led the team with two brilliant goals. The other. two goals were scor- ed by Mark Divet and Jon Myers. directors directors of the Pennsyl- vania Petroleum Associa- tion.
