Donegal soccer team wins 2 to 0
The Donegal Soccer
Team opened its season
last Thursday by defeating
Conestoga Valley by a
score of 2 to 0. The Indians
totally dominated the play
during the entire game. In
the first quarter a penalty
kick by Mark ‘‘Welby”
Weidman just missed
bouncing off the goalpost.
Just S3 seconds into the
second quarter the Indians
got their first score as John
Hayman capitalized on a
corner kick.
The Indians continued
attacking nearly scoring
with shots by Henry Klugh
and Kris McCue. Goalie
Brent Becker made a near-
ly impossible save to end
the first half.
When the C.V. goalie
fell, Jake Sherk assisted by
Henry Klugh scored two
‘minutes and fifteen se-
oconds into the quarter.
Greg Lindemuth made a
brilliant save when Brent
Becker fell in his attempt:
prevent the Buckskins from
scoring. Donegal kept the
pressure on and the game
ended with the Indians of
Donegal shutting out the
Buckskins of C.V.
The J.V. team soundly
defeated C.V. three to one.
Mark Bataille, Donegal’s
French exchange student,
scored a goal for the
Indians. Jon Myers led the
J.V.’s with two goals.
On Friday, September
10, the Indians met a
formidable opponent: Gar-
den Spot. A corner early in
the first quarter resulted in
a goal for Smith of Garden
Spot. Donegal, however
was not to be intimidated
and responded with shots
on goal by Kris McCue and
Ron Meckley. Although the
Indians outplayed the Spar-
tansy luck was on their
opponent’s side and the
Spartans’ Flora booted
home a goal. Not to be
outdone, the Indians got
on the scoreboard when
Ron Meckley scored. Good
saves by Kris McCue and
Paul Smith prevented Gar-
den Spot from scoring
other goals. The Indians
regained their momentun
in the fourth quarter with
close shots by Sang Noua
and Mark Weidman. Des-
pite all their efforts, the
Indians came up on the
short side.
The J.V. stomped Gar-
den Spot four to one. Clyde
Bitner and Steve Marshall
each scored once while Jon
Myers again scored twice.
The D.H.S. soccer team
really appreciates the fans
who come to cheer them on
to victory. Game time is 4
p.m. at the W. I. Beahm
Junior High School.
