Winners named in the Mount Joy men’s & women’s tennis tourney The third Annual Men's and Women’s Doubles ten- nis tournament was held on a beautiful Labor Day weekend in Mount Joy. For the third year in a row the smashing team of Bill Houseal, Jr. and Dave Schlosser won the men’s doubles title. They became the champions by defeating the father and son team of Gerald and Drew Hostetter in the finals, 3-6; 6-2; and 6-0. The rest of their matches were taken in straight sets. They defeat- ed Bill Roberts and Jack Brenneman in the semi- finals with their hard-driv- ing, well-placed shots 6-4, 6-3. Their tremendous vol- ley game helped them de- feat two excellent tennis players, Dr. Harold Fellen- baum and Frank Zink 6-3, 6-3. During the first round they defeated two young- sters from Elizabethtown o-1, 6-1. The defending champ- ions from last year won the women’s title in two hour, three set dual. Marianne Coover and Linda Hershey defeated Kitty Etsell and Sharon Grissinger 6-7, 6-2, and 6-3. Etsell and Gris- singer won the first set by rushing the net and putting the ball out of play. The consistancy of ground- strokes and the well-placed lobs of Hershey and Coover was enough to break down Etsell and Grissinger’s net game in the last two sets. Coover and Hershey de- feated Peg Elliot and Donna Bowersox of Colum- bia 6-1, 7-6 in the semi- finals. During the first round of play they defeated the [East Petersburg champions Pat Lewicki and Charlotte Shaub 6-0, 6-3. Congratulations from the Mount Joy Tennis Club and the spectators to both the men's and women’s champions for defending their titles. These four champions and all the participants made the matches enjoyable for everyone to watch with their great sportsmanship and excellent playing.
