76 September 15, 1976 ...Marietta Brothers Jay and Barbara Reich visited Silver City, Nevada on their vacation this July. While they were there they photographed the grave of Hosea Grosh, the Marietta native who discovered the Comstock Lode. Because of the important part Grosh played in Silver City’s history the local fire department has preserved his broken tombstone in concrete. continued from Page 1 at the cabin door and offered to nurse Hosea so that his brother Allen could: keep working. Allen agreed. Despite Comstock’s nursing, Hosea Grosch died of lockjaw. Allen wrote to his father, “I feel lonely and miss Hosea— so much that at times I am strongly tempt- ed to abandon everything and leave the country for- ever, cowardly as such a course would be. But I shall go on. It is my duty. And I cannot bear to give anything up until I bring it to its conclusion. By Hosea’s death you fall heir to his spare in the enter- prise...” Allen was completely broke. He went into debt to pay for a coffin and a suit of good clothes for his brother’s funeral. By the time he had paid off his debts, the weather was getting cold. Allen and his assistant Richard Burke decided to cross the Sierra Nevada to California, where they could raise money for a real mining operation. Comstock, the wild mountain man, stayed at the cabin to guard Allen’s equipment. In return, Allen gave Comstock a large and generous claim. In the mountains above Lake Tahoe, a blinding snowstorm overtook the two travels and their don- key. They fought their way through mountainous drifts until they reached Squaw Valley. Walls of soft bil- lowy snow hid the outgoing pass. The men camped in the valley until their pro- visions ran out. The donkey was dying of hunger. Charles Smith, new officer of the Marietta Post Office Charles Smith has been assigned Officer in Charge of the Marietta Post Office. Mr. Smith is a native of Manheim. He has served as Postmaster of Goodville, and has been running the Marietta P.O. since former Postmaster Frank Seaman went on extended sick leave. Mr. Smith has two daughters. He and his wife, Rosalia, live in Akron. The other members of the Marietta Post Office staff are: John Goodling, Jr., and Jeffrey Shank, clerks; Benjamin Billett, William Fahringer, and Benjamin Thompson, car- riers; Albert Dettinger, rural carrier; and Donald Drager, assistant rural car- rier. Allen was attached to the animal, but he closed his eyes and shot her. The two men carried her meat on their backs, and Allen carried his charts and assays in his shirt. Pulling themselves up- ward by clutching rocks and tree branches, Allen and Richard struggled on- ward. After a few days the meat ran out. Their matches and gunpowder became soaked and would not light. Once they found some human footprints in the snow, but their joy disappeared when they re- cognized their own tracks— they had travelled in a circle. When a party of deer- hunting miners finally found the pair, they were half-dead from hunger and frostbite. The miners amputated Richard Burke’s frozen feet with a saw and Bowie knife. Allen refused to let the miners operate on his own frozen legs. Richard Burke eventually recovered, but Allen died. His last words were incom- prehensible to everyone who heard them, including Richard Burke. ‘‘Hosea— blue stuff— company,” Allen muttered. When Spring came, Comstock, who was still guarding the cabin, learned that Allen was dead. He broke into Allen’s strong- box, searched the papers, but failed to discover the secret of the ‘‘blue stuff.” Comstock filed claims for the land the brothers had explored, on the hunch that they had found something very valuable. He was right, and the rich silver veins became known as the “Comstock Lode.” (TIOIYIOITIA] MAZDA NEW CARS START AT ‘$2789.00 Always a wide selection of import & compact used cars.
