Page 14 - SUSQUEHANNA TIMES Letter: more on local Dear Editor, In the June 23rd issue I read about the mills in this area. The account concerning the last Spangler Mill covered the last number of years. I am enclosing informa- tion of the origin of that mill from the year 1857. Gabriel Bear was my great grandfather. The informa- tion concerning the mill 1 am writing about was in a Centennial Souvenier Book of 1812 to 1912. This book has been in our family, and handed down through a number of generations. Sincerely, Mrs. Anna Grissinger P.S. The Mill is on the North Market Street, a few doors beyond the Post Office. BRANDT & STEHMAN’S MILL NOW ‘“‘SPANGLERS’ (from 1912 Souvenier Book) Mount Joy has the dis- tinction of having the first roller process flour mill in the State. The mill was first built in 1887 by Gabriel Bear, who moved here from Lititz in the spring of the same year, who operated it for several vears when he gave the wuisness into the hands of his son Samuel Bear who conducted it for a few years vhen he died. Afterwhich nis father again took charge. In the course of a few years, Mr. Bear sold out to John M. Brandt, who operated the mill only a short time when he took in A. K. Manning as a partner. The mill was then run under the firm name of Brandt and Manning, and was greatly remodeled dur- ing the year 1881 and were the first to install the roller process for making flour, in PA in fact there were only a few roller mills in the United States at that time. The first one in this country being operated at Minneapolis, Minnesota by Washburn, Crosby and Co. The mill was started in the fall of 1881 and the demand for roller flour at once became so great that they were compelled to run day and nigh! 24 hours in a day and round 800 pushels of eat in that time filling 00 barrels of flour. They found ready sale for the: flour in the Philadelphia and New York markets, and merchants from Baltimore and various cities of New Jersey gave them large orders. The mills of the surrounding towns and cities, which were then unable to sell their flour made by the old method followed the example of the Mount Joy Roller Mill and also instal- led the roller process. The mill ran under the management of Brandt and Manning for ten years when Mr. Manning retired mills from 1912 book from the firm and Mr. Brandt conducted the busi- ness alone for some time until he took in I. D. Steh- man as a partner and the firm was known as Brandt & Stehman ever since. In 1910 Mr. Brandt died and his son Owen Brandt was taken in as a partner in his father’s stead. Since the installation of the roller process this mill LalafoaS 2.2 2 2.2.0.0. 8.0 2.8.8 4 THE FAMILY PLACE TO SAVE has turned out an immense lot of fine roller flour, which has been shipped to all parts of the world, but during the present year of 1912 all the old machinery has been torn out and a new roller process has been placed in its stead, with which they are able to grind spring wheat and make flour that is second to none.
